Cassian’s face was stone. I sent you to the Academy for combat and tactics to protect yourself and the pack. Not to start fights.”

His Alpha aura tightened instinctively, a palpable weight settling over the office.

Attwater struggled, his hair bristling like a cornered pup. The boy’s chaotic, adolescent pheromones flared. Let go of me, Cassian! I want to fight you oneonone!

He lifted his chin, trying to push back with his underdeveloped Alpha aura, but the raw edge immediately dulled and suppressed against the wall of the adult Alpha’s aura.

Cassian’s brow twitched. I’m your sister’s mate. Watch your mouth.

Attwater’s eyes blazed red. The scent around his gland completely dissolved into the unique, impulsive heat of a young wolf. You had a baby with another shewolf! You broke Trista’s heart! You are not her mate anymore!

The office went silent.

Two Alpha scents clashed: one young, explosive; the other steady, repressive.

Cassian’s eyes darkened. He eased his grip, softening his aura, and let go of Attwater’s wrists.

Attwater jumped up, flexing his arms. His posture was aggressive, ready to fight to the death.

The boy’s Alpha aura was messy but sharp, like new claws pointed in the wrong direction, but driven by serious courage.

Cassian spoke again, his voice now lower. He kept his aura firmly contained, just enough to demand attention without pinning the boy down. Attwater, the issue between your sister and me is a private matter within our mating bond.”

He kept his tone flat. Until she officially terminates the mating before the Stone Circle, I am your brotherinlaw, and I have the right to discipline you.”

He dropped the explanations, going straight for the facts. Now, why did you fight your classmate?

Attwater wouldn’t budge. His chest heaved, his young scent heavy with hurt and rage. Trista is done with you! You have no right to discipline me!

The words felt like a claw dragging over an old wound.

Cassian stared at Attwater’s face, silent for a long moment.

He didn’t increase his pressure, but kept his Alpha aura anchored, demanding eye contact without crushing the boy.

They stood locked in a stalemate.

The boy’s breathing was ragged, his pheromones surging. The adult Alpha’s presence was a still, heavy wall. The air in the office was cold, almost crystalline.

Finally, Cassian spoke. You’re coming home with me now. I’ll let your sister tell whether I am still her mate.

you herself

Cassian, I will never speak to you again!

Attwater kicked the chair over. The legs scraped violently across the floor.

He shoved past the doorway, charging out of the office. His intense, young scent left a clear wake behind him.

The door slammed shut, followed by instant silence.

Cassian leaned on the desk, his face grim, his knuckles white.

He tightened his aura, forcing the surge of Alpha aura back into his bones. His throat worked hard before his breathing normalized.

Humphrey cautiously knocked and entered. Alpha Cassian, the matter with the other family is resolved. Why don’t you head back? The Academy will email you the final report later.”

Cassian dismissed him with a steady voice. Tell the Academy that Attwater is in the middle of his awakening. Advise them to communicate carefully and treat him with respect.

Humphrey only dared to nod. Yes, Alpha Cassian.

Cassian returned to his car. Just as he sat down, the commstone by his side lit up again.

He saw the contact name and tiredly pinched the bridge of his nose before answering.

On the mindlink, Samantha’s excitement was barely contained. Cassian, where are you now? I made

you dinner, you should—

Cassian interrupted before she could finish. Samantha, don’t bother.”

He glanced out the window at the approaching city lights. His voice was flat and final. Trista is waiting for me. You and Algernon should rest.
