Chapter 91
Trista’s POV
The silverleaf purification array still glowed faintly over the doorway of the healing center, not far from my dorm. I rubbed my aching temples and filed the final “Lunar Rhythm and Pheromone Balance Report.”
I had immersed myself in the treatment room all day, not even relaxing during lunch. I needed my hands to stay busy to suppress the persistent, dull ache of the mating bond behind my
sternum.
Cassian’s mind–link had pricked my consciousness once in the afternoon, like a fine needle, but I instantly cut the connection.
I knew his logic too well. As the Alpha of the Ironthorn pack, his schedule was more structured than a pack territory map. There was no way he’d spend an entire day at this branch so far from the Ironthorn barrier, just for me.
In the evening, as I walked out of the institute, a familiar scent aggressively cut into the air- cold metal mixed with pine resin. Cassian’s unique Alpha pheromones dominated the small square by the entrance.
A crowd of colleagues was clustered together, murmuring in amazement. I drew closer and realized he was the center of attention.
He wore a dark, subtly patterned black suit. His shoulders were rigidly straight, like a fence on a wolf training ground.
He naturally raised his hand, pointing toward me, his voice carrying unmistakable control. “This is my Luna, Trista.”
The Alpha aura swept through the air. My colleagues instinctively checked their breathing and bowed respectfully.
I kept my composure, nodding briefly, but my fingers clenched at my
sides-
His pheromones, incredibly, carried a faint omega sweetness. It was Samantha’s scent.
I maintained distance as I got into his car, chilling my own scent down to an icy block.
The car had just entered the highway when I spoke abruptly. “Stop the car. I’m getting out.”
Cassian’s aura paused, the air instantly thickening.
He hesitated for a few seconds, eventually pulling over at the nearest exit. He followed me out.

The wind on the overpass carried the city’s dust, clashing with our lupine scents. The traffic below looked like a river of light.
“Why haven’t you returned to Ironthorn?” I stared at the lights below, deliberately avoiding his gaze. The mating bond twitched slightly beneath my ribs, as if pulled.
He suddenly gripped my wrist, the heat of his palm a specific Alpha burn.
A piece of cold metal pressed against my ring finger. It was the companion ring engraved with the Ironthorn crest, which he forced back onto my hand.
His thumb rubbed the surface. His vertical pupils faintly flickered, his voice low and growled. “I don’t mind you staying here for your internship. But terminating the mating bond? Impossible.”
My wolf lifted its head in my mind, a low snarl rumbling in my throat.
I violently yanked my hand free, fiercely tearing the ring off my finger. I turned and threw it off the bridge!
“Trista, no-”
Cassian’s pupils contracted sharply. His Alpha instinct made him reach out, but he caught only air.
The ring flashed once under the lights, like a broken mating bond, falling straight into the traffic below and vanishing forever.
Instantly, a dull pain spread from the mating bond beneath my ribs, like countless fine needles.
My wolf clawed at my ribcage, letting out a suppressed whine, its claws threatening to pierce
skin.

The overpass lights came on, casting cold light on us. The air was so quiet I could hear our breathing–his Alpha breath sharp, mine wrapped in metallic coldness.
After dozens of seconds of silence, Cassian suddenly locked his hand around my wrist, the force nearly crushing bone.
His face was grim, like a pack territory before a storm. His voice was heavy, his aura overwhelming my arm. “That was our companion ring, the seal of our contract witnessed by the Moon Goddess.”
I violently threw him off, my pheromones spiking with the chilling intensity unique to the Silverlight pack. “I want you to disappear completely, just like this ring.”
