Chapter 127 Under The City Lights

“I’m not accusing anyone of anything. Yet. I’m just saying the truth always has a way of coming out. And when it does, when everyone finds out what really happened that night, things are going to get very complicated for the Nethys family. And anyone associated with them.” He looked directly at Drakonius. “Even you.”
“Is that a threat?” Frost asked, appearing at their side like a shadow. He must have noticed the confrontation from across the room.
“It’s a warning,” Xan said. “To be careful. The past isn’t as buried as some people think. And Sarah deserves the truth. She deserves justice.”
“Sarah deserves therapy and medication adjustments,” Elera snapped. “And you deserve to stop enabling her delusions and get some help yourself.”
Xan’s mask slipped for a second, showing real anger underneath. “You don’t get to dismiss her. You don’t get to act like she’s crazy just because her truth is inconvenient for you.“.
“Her truth? She’s rewritten history to make herself the victim. She’s convinced you that I’m some kind of monster based on gaps in her memory and paranoia. And you’re so desperate to be her white knight that you’re buying it.”
“That’s enough,” Drakonius said firmly. “Valdris, walk away. This conversation is over.”
“It’s not over. Not even close. The investigation is ongoing. The truth is coming. And when it does, you’re all going to wish you’d been nicer to Sarah.” Xan stepped back, his charming smile sliding back into place. “Enjoy the rest of the gala. I know I will.”
He walked away, disappearing into the crowd. Elera felt shaky, adrenaline coursing through her system.
‘He knows something,” she said quietly. “Or he thinks he does. Either way, this is bad.”
“We’ll deal with it,” Drakonius said. “Whatever he’s found, whatever he thinks he’s found, we’ll handle it.”
‘But what if he’s right? What if my father really was involved in those deaths? What if I saw something that night and just don’t remember?”
“Then we figure it out. Together. But right now, we’re at a gala, we’re being watched, and we need to act like nothing just happened.”
He was right. They couldn’t fall apart here. They had to be strong, unbothered, perfect.
“I need air,” Elera said. “Just for a minute.”
“I’ll come with you,”
“No, you should stay. If we both disappear, it’ll look suspicious. I’ll just step out onto the terrace for a minute to catch my breath.”
“Take Frost.”

She slipped away before he could argue, making her way through the crowd toward the terrace doors. The cool night air hit her face and she breathed deeply, trying to calm her racing heart.
The terrace was mostly empty, just a few people smoking and talking in quiet groups. She found a quiet corner and leaned against the railing, looking out at the city lights.
“Elara.”
She turned to find Drakonius behind her. Of course he’d followed her. Of course he hadn’t listened when she said she’d be fine.
“I told you to stay inside,” she said, but there was no heat in it.
“I don’t follow orders well. It’s a character flaw. He came to stand beside her at the railing. “You okay?”
“I don’t know. Xan’s investigation, whatever he’s found, it’s going to come out. And when it does, people are going to ask questions. About my father, about that night, about me
“Then we get ahead of it. We investigate ourselves, find the truth before he can weaponize it.”
“What if the truth is ugly? What if my father really did something terrible?”
“Then we deal with that too. But Elera, whatever your father did or didn’t do, it’s not your fault. You were eighteen. You were a kid. You’re not responsible for his sins.”
“Aren’t I though? I’ve spent years covering for him, making excuses, protecting the family name. Maybe if I’d spoken up carlier, if I’d been braver, Sarah wouldn’t have spent five years locked up. Maybe I could have helped her.”
“Or maybe you would have been the one locked up. Or worse. You did what you had to do to survive. That’s not a crime.”
Elera felt tears threatening again. “I’m so tired of fighting. Of constantly being under attack. I just want one day where I’m not worried about who’s trying to destroy me.”
