The Heiress He Underestimated novel Chapter 13

Chapter 13 A Kiss Interrupted

Dinner that night was served under a canopy of stars. The yacht had anchored in a secluded cove, the only lights coming from the boat itself and the vast, impossible spill of the Milky Way above. It was the type of setting designed for confession, for intimacy, for sweeping a woman off her feet.

Elera sat across from Xan at a small table on the upper deck, a single candle flickering between them. She wore the white sundress, and a light wrap was draped over her shoulders against the evening chill that came off the water. She looked every inch the enchanted ingénue, her eyes wide as she gazed up at the stars.

“It’s so beautiful out here,” she breathed, her voice barely above a whisper. “It feels like we’re the only two people in the world.”

Xan smiled, a slow, satisfied curve of his lips as he swirled the rich red wine in his glass. “That’s the idea, Elera. No distractions. Just us.” He leaned forward slightly, the candlelight carving shadows into his handsome face. “Tell me something real. Something no one else knows.”

It was another test, another probe. He was digging for vulnerability, for a soft spot to exploit later. She made her eyes go a little misty, looking down at her hands as if gathering courage.

“Sometimes,” she began, her voice soft and hesitant, “I feel a little… invisible. Like people see the dress and the smile, but they don’t really see me. Daddy… he just wants me to be happy, but his idea of happy is so simple. A good marriage, a nice house.” She looked up, letting her lower lip tremble just a fraction. “I think there must be more to life than that, but I don’t know how to find it. I’m not brave like other people.”

It was the perfect cocktail of insecurity and latent desire, designed to make him feel both superior and needed. He took the bait, his expression shifting to one of tender concern.

“Oh, Elera,” he said, reaching across the table to take her hand. His skin was warm, his grip firm. “You are ‘braver than you know. And you don’t have to find anything on your own. That’s what I’m here for. I see you.

I see the sweet, beautiful woman you are, and I want to give you that bigger life. A life full of passion and adventure.”
