Elera’s heart did a slow, warm flip in her chest. She shifted to look at him properly. “Terrifying?”

“Terrifying,” he confirmed. “Because when you see something that beautiful, that brilliant, that strong… you realize how much you have to lose if it goes away.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” she whispered.

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

He leaned down and kissed her, right there in the back of the SUV, with Clara snoring softly in the front and Frost pretending very hard not to see them in the rearview mirror. It was a soft kiss, gentle, a promise of its own.

When they broke apart, he rested his forehead against hers. “We’re going to win this, you know,” he said. “We’re going to take down your father. We’re going to save my life. And then we’re going to have that boring normal life you keep pretending you don’t want.”

Elera laughed, it was a real laugh that felt good after all the tension. “I never said I wanted a boring life.”

“Quiet, then, peaceful.”

“I could handle peaceful.”

“Good. Because I’m planning on a lot of things to do that. And a lot of you.”

They lapsed into comfortable silence again. Elera watched the rain–streaked world go by outside. Her father was a murderer. Sarah was broken and Xan was lost. Her life was a complicated web of lies and secrets and danger.

But in this car, with this man’s arm around her, with her best friend snoring in the front seat

and her overly paranoid head of security driving them home, she felt something she hadn’t felt in a very long time.

She felt like she was exactly where she was supposed to be.

And for now, that was enough.
