The Heiress He Underestimated

Chapter 20 In Her Hands Alone

Something in his posture, a tension she hadn’t fully noticed, eased. “Good. Then can we proceed? I believe I am your patient.”

The shift was immediate. The detective receded; the doctor took over. She picked up a nearby chart, all business. “Alright. Let’s see what we’re working with.”

For the next three hours, she was in her element. She directed his team with quiet authority, running a new series of scans, taking fresh blood samples, conducting neurological tests more precise than the ones in her lab. She moved around him with a confident, gentle efficiency, her fingers sure as she checked his reflexes, her questions sharp and insightful.

He submitted to it all with a patience that surprised her. He answered every question, followed every instruction. He watched her as she worked, his gaze thoughtful.

“You’re different here,” he said at one point, as she studied a real–time feed of his neural activity.

“So are you,” she replied without looking up.

“How so?”

“You’re not trying to be in charge.”

A faint, almost smile touched his lips. “I told you. In this, you are in charge.”

It was true. In this room, surrounded by his own empire, he had ceded all power to her. It was the most honest form of trust she had ever been given.

‘By the time they finished, the afternoon light was slanting long through the window, painting the garden in gold. She had a tablet full of new data, her mind already whirring with adjustments to the Chimera Protocol.

“Well?” he asked, as she helped him sit up. He was breathing a little heavier, the tests having taken their toll.

“It’s worse than I hoped,” she said frankly, sitting on the edge of his bed, the doctor giving way to the person for a moment. “But not as bad as I feared. The degeneration is progressing, but there are pathways that are still open. The Chimera Protocol… it’s our best shot. But we need to start soon. Very soon.”

“And our other project?he asked, turning his head back to her. “The wedding?”

“Agreed.” He was quiet for a moment. “Will you be moving in here afterwards? This suite has everything you would need. For your work, and for… this.

“Yes,” she said. “I think that would be best.

She turned.

“Thank you,” he said. Not for the medicine. Not for the plan. Just… thank you.

She didn’t know what to say. So she just nodded, a strange tightness in her chest.

Driving away from the Vex compound, the weight of the day settled on her. She had an ally, but one surrounded by enemies she didn’t know. She had a patient who was trusting her with his life. She had a fake fiancé she had to publicly betray. And she had a wedding to plan to a man who was still mostly a stranger.

But for the first time, the chaos had a shape. It had a plan. And as she merged onto the highway, the city skyline glowing in the distance, she realized she wasn’t driving away from something. She was driving towards it. Towards the fight. Towards the cure.

Towards Drakonius.
