Up front. Lin drove like a man possessed, weaving through late night traffic with a terrifying disregard for traffic laws. The city lights blurred into streaks of white and red outside the windows. In the back, the mood had shattered like glass.

Elera was on her knees in front of her aunt, clutching the older woman’s hands. “Aunt Margaret, listen to me. You’re going with Frost and Clara. They’ll take you somewhere safe, somewhere he can’t find you. Do exactly what they say.”

Margaret’s face, just beginning to relax, tightened with fresh fear. “But you’re coming, aren’t you?”

“We have to go home.” Elera’s voice broke. “He’s in our home.”

Understanding dawned in Margaret’s eyes, followed by a deep, maternal dread. She cupped Elera’s face. “Oh. my brave girl. Be careful. He’s… he’s not my brother anymore. He’s something else.”

Drakonius was across the van, talking in a low, urgent voice to Frost. “You take the second SUV. Go to the airstrip. The jet is fueled and waiting. You get her to Montana. Don’t stop, don’t look back.”

Frost gave a sharp nod. “Understood. But, sir, you’re down to just Lin for security at the house. That’s unacceptable.”

“We don’t have a choice!” Drakonius’s composure was fraying. A fine tremor had started in his left hand, the one he was trying to use to grip the seatback. “He’s in the lab, Frost. He could be destroying it all right now. We can’t wait for a tactical team. We have to go now.”

“I’m going with you,” Xan said. The words cut through the planning. He stood, bracing himself against the

van’s sway.

“No.” Elera and Drakonius said in unison.

“You’re a liability,” Drakonius continued, his voice cold. “You’re emotionally involved. You’ll make a mistake.”

Xan didn’t back down. “I know him. I know how he thinks when he’s cornered. And you’re wrong. I’m not emotionally involved with him. Not anymore. But I am involved in this mess. I helped make it. Let me help clean it up. He looked at Elera. “Please.”

Elera saw it then, in his eyes. This wasn’t about winning her back. This was about being able to look in a mirror tomorrow. She gave a tiny, exhausted nod. “Okay.”

“That’s a terrible idea,” Frost stated, but he was already moving. The van screeched to a halt in a deserted industrial lot. Another black SUV idled nearby, its driver one of Frost’s men who’d been shadowing them.

“Split up!” Frost commanded. It was all business again. “Arrow, Strike, Silent, with me and the asset. We are wheels to the runway. Lin, you take Sentinel, Ghost, and Oracle to the primary location. Defensive posture only. Do not engage until we can loop back. Understood?”

“Understood, Control,” Lin said, his hands already on the wheel of the first van as Frost’s team bundled a confused but cooperative Margaret into the second vehicle.
