The Heiress He Underestimated novel Chapter 228

Chapter 228 My Fierce Wife

Elera didn’t move. She didn’t dare breathe. She just watched, her heart hammering against her ribs so loudly she was sure he must be able to hear it.

His eyes, those intelligent, weary eyes, drifted slowly, aimlessly, around the room. They passed over the IV pole, the monitor screens, the dim shapes of the room. They were hazy with drugs and the profound disorientation of returning from a long, dark journey.

Then they drifted to her.

They stopped and they focused on her. The haze didn’t clear completely, but it parted, just enough for recognition to dawn. It was a slow, painful sunrise in the heart of a big hailstorm.

He looked at her. At her tired face, her messy hair and her eyes wide with hope and fear.

His lips, dry and cracked, parted. He tried to speak, but no sound came out. He swallowed with obvious difficulty, his throat working. He tried again.

The word was less than a whisper. It was a breath. A shape formed by lips that didn’t quite obey. A puff of air with an intention behind it.

But she heard it. She heard it in the very center of her soul.

Elera.

Her name. Rough and broken and the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.

The dam inside her, the one that had held back an ocean of fear and stress and love and terror for what

elt like a lifetime, shattered.

A small, choked sound escaped her. Then another. She bent forward, pressing her forehead against their oined hands on the bed, and the tears came, heaving sobs that shook her entire body. She cried for the error of the gunshot, for the agony of the failed procedure, for the long, silent vigil, for the sight of his eyes closing and not knowing if they would ever open again. She cried for the weight of it all, a weight she had carried alone in this room for days, the weight of being the doctor, the wife and the last line of defense between him and the void.

She cried, and she couldn’t stop.

she felt his hand move weakly, trying to curl around hers. She felt his other hand, the one with the IV, lift shakily and come to rest on her hair. His touch was faint, uncoordinated, but it was there. A clumsy attempt at comfort.

Shhh,he rasped, the single syllable costing him immense effort. I’mhere.

Which only made her cry harder. Ugly, gasping, relieved sobs.

Frost, from his corner, had straightened up. He didn’t smileFrost didn’t really do smilesbut the severe lines of his face softened. He gave a small, satisfied nod, then turned his attention pointedly to the door. giving them the illusion of privacy.

Chapter 28 My Fierce Wife

Elera didn’t know how long she cried. It felt like years. When the storm finally began to subside, leaving her spent and hollowed out but somehow lighter, she lifted her head. Her face was a mess of tears and she didn’t care.

He was still looking at her, his gaze clearer now, though swimming with exhaustion. You’rea mess,he whispered, each word a labor.

A wet, shaky laugh bubbled out of her. Youyou are literally on a ventilator and you’re critiquing my appearance?

Someonehas to,he managed. His eyes drifted closed for a second, then forced themselves open again, as if he was afraid she’d disappear. Myside hurts.

You were shot, she said, her voice thick. And then your body tried to kill you from the inside. You’ve beenaway for a while.”

Away,he repeated vaguely. His mind was clearly working slowly, piecing fragments together. Kieran?

In jail and he will be in jail for a long, long time.”

A long blink.A slow exhale. Good.” His eyes searched her face. You?

The single word held a universe of concern. Are you hurt? Are you okay? What did he do to you?

I’m fine, she said, and for the first time in days, it wasn’t a lie. Now that you’re back, I’m fine.

He gave the tiniest shake of his head, a man who knew that was a simplification of epic proportions. His thumb moved weakly against her hand. Yousaved me.”
