Chapter 29 Surprising Them

Elera’s eyes scanned the room. She found her father, beaming, already accepting congratulatory pats on the back. She found Drakonius, standing now, his expression unreadable.

“…and to cement this new chapter,” Xan continued, his voice swelling, “it is my greatest joy to introduce to you all, not just my business partner’s daughter…” He squeezed her hand, his grip too tight. “But my future wife. My beautiful Elyrian!”

The room erupted in applause. Flashbulbs went off. Xan turned to her, his face a picture of expectant triumph. This was her cue. She was supposed to look up at him with tearful joy, to accept his kiss, to seal the deal in front of everyone.

Every eye in the room was on her. The applause began to die down, waiting for her response.

She looked at Xan, at his handsome, confident face. She saw the cruel satisfaction in his eyes, the certainty of his victory. She saw the ghost of Sarah Lyros in his smile.

And she knew, with absolute clarity, that she could not do it. She could not give him this moment. Not even as an act.

A profound silence fell over the ballroom.

Elera slowly, deliberately, pulled her hand from Xan’s grasp.

She did not look at him. She turned her head, and her gaze found Drakonius’s across the hushed room. She gave him a single, almost imperceptible nod.

Then she looked back at the waiting crowd, at the confused, staring faces. She let her eyes sweep over them, the society that had dismissed her, the world that had underestimated her.

She took a small step forward, towards the microphone Xan had used. Her voice, when she spoke, was not the breathy whisper of Elyrian Nethys. It was low, clear, and carried to the far corners of the silent room.

“Thank you, Xan, for that… generous introduction.” She paused, letting the odd formality hang in the air. “And thank you all for being here tonight to witness this… important moment.”

She could see Xan’s smile begin to freeze, confusion dawning in his eyes. Her father was staring, his face slowly draining of color.

Elera allowed herself a small, sad smile. It was not the smile of a happy bride. It was the smile of someone who knew a secret. “Life,” she said, her voice gaining strength, “is full of surprises. We make plans. We build narratives. But sometimes… the story has a different ending.”

She looked directly at Xan, and for the first time, she let him see the cold, sharp intelligence she had hidden for so long. She saw the first flicker of real fear in his eyes.
