Chapter 40 The Patriarch’s Power Play
At precisely ten o’clock in the morning, under a bright, cheerfully indifferent sky, Kieran Nethys stepped before the forest of microphones and cameras assembled once more on the sweeping driveway of his mansion. This time, his demeanor was not one of shattered grief, but of solemn, heartfelt relief. He had practiced the expression in the mirror–the slight tremble of a smile, the eyes glistening with unshed tears of joy. He wore a suit of sober charcoal gray, projecting a man who had weathered a storm with dignity.
The press was larger this time, buzzing with a different energy. The scandal of the jilting had been juicy. The mystery of the disownment was tragic. But the promise of a twist, of a reconciliation, of a shocking revelation–that was pure gold. They were ravenous for it.
‘Ladies and gentlemen,” Kieran began, his voice carrying the perfect blend of weariness and warmth. “Thank you for coming back. Yesterday, I stood before you a broken man. A father’s heart, laid bare by what I believed was a daughter’s ultimate betrayal.”
He paused, looking down as if gathering strength. The cameras clicked furiously.
In my pain, in my shock, I spoke words I regret. Words of finality. Words that severed the deepest bond a nan can know.” He looked up, his jaw firming with resolve. “But a father’s love… a true father’s love… is not o easily destroyed. It is a resilient force. And overnight, through the grace of understanding and communication, that force has healed our family.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd. He had them.
Last night, I was able to speak with my daughter, Elyrian.” He used her full name, formal, respectful. “And
He straightened up, his voice strengthening, filling with paternal pride. “So today, I am here not to disown her but to reclaim her. Not to condemn her but to celebrate her. My precious daughter is safe. She is oved. And she is now married to a man of such immense character and standing that I am humbled to welcome him into our family.”
The word married landed like a thunderclap. A shout went up from the crowd. “Married? To whom, Mr. Nethys?”
Kieran held up a hand, a master controlling his audience. “My daughter’s husband is a man who values privacy above publicity. A man whose achievements speak not in headlines, but in quiet, world–changing impact. Out of respect for his wishes, and for their new life together, I will not say his name from this podium.”
He saw the flicker of frustration in the reporters‘ eyes and savored it. He was giving them a mystery, and in doing so, he was making himself the gatekeeper. All inquiries would come to him.
