The Heiress He Underestimated novel Chapter 49

Chapter 49 Eye Of The Hurricane

She wanted to be invisible, Elera thought. She wanted to be so quiet, so small, that no one would ever think to burn her dreams. But she couldn’t say that.

“She wanted to understand how things worked,” Elera said instead, which was also true. “She took apart the kitchen toaster to see the coils. She read her mother’s old medical textbooks instead of romance novels. She wanted to fix broken things.”

“A healer, even then,” he murmured.

“Maybe. Or just a tinkerer. Someone who couldn’t leave a mystery unsolved.”

He watched her for a long moment, and she had the unnerving sense that he was seeing past the words, down to the lonely, curious girl she had been. “And now you have the biggest mystery of all laid out on your slides,” he said. “My decaying DNA. Are you enjoying the puzzle, Dr. Mystral?”

The use of her secret name, here in this firelit room, felt intimate. A shared confession.

“Yes,” she admitted quietly, holding his gaze. “It’s the most fascinating, terrifying puzzle I’ve ever faced. And I won’t stop until I solve it.”

Something shifted in his expression. The weariness was still there, but beneath it was a look of profound, unguarded gratitude. It was a look that said he believed her. Not just as his doctor, but as the person who had climbed into an ice bath to save him, who had promised him a meeting with an author, who saw the boy who had lost his balsa wood house and not just the dying king.

The moment stretched, fragile and charged. The crackle of the fire was the only sound.

A soft chime from her tablet broke the spell. It was an alert from the security system. Frost.

Perimeter scan detected a low–altitude drone. Civilian model, but with modified range and camera equipment. Originated from a private vessel three miles offshore. The vessel is registered to a shell corporation. Tracing. Advise increased vigilance.

Elera’s blood went cold.
