The Heiress He Underestimated

Chapter 8 Anomalies In The Code

It was late afternoon when she finally finished the last of the physical tests. She had a mountain of data, more than she had ever collected on a single person. She felt tired, but exhilarated. The problem was immense, but now it was real. It had a face and a name.

She handed him a glass of water. “You should drink this. You have lost a lot of fluids.”

He took it, his fingers brushing against hers. His skin was cold. “What is your initial assessment, Doctor?” he asked, his tone carefully neutral.

She leaned back against a counter, crossing her arms. “It is bad. Just as your files said. Your body is essentially forgetting how to repair itself at a cellular level. It is like a book where the ending is being slowly erased, word by word.”

He absorbed this, his expression not changing. “I see.”

“But,” she continued, and his eyes snapped back to hers, a tiny spark of something desperate flaring in their gray depths. “But, there are anomalies. Little quirks in your genetic makeup that your other doctors probably dismissed as irrelevant. I do not think they are irrelevant. I think they might be the key.”

“The key to what?”

“To a treatment. Not a cure. Not yet. But a way to slow it down. A way to give us more time to find a real solution.” She pushed away from the counter, her excitement making her forget her professional detachment for a moment. “I have an idea. I am calling it the Chimera Protocol. It is risky. It is theoretical. It has never been tried on a human being.”

He studied her face, taking in the light in her eyes, the determined set of her jaw. “What does it involve?”

“A combination of targeted gene therapy and a synthesized enzyme I have been developing. We would essentially be trying to teach your cells a new way to read the damaged parts of the book. To fill in the blanks.”

And the risks?” he asked.
