Chapter 98 Unraveling

Elera and Drakonius sat in silence for a moment, processing what had just happened.

“Do you believe her?” Elera asked finally.

“I don’t know. Lyra is good at saying what people want to hear. But there was something in her voice, something genuine. Maybe she really does regret it. Or maybe she’s planning something even worse and this is just setting the stage.” He shook his head. “Either way, we stay cautious. Trust but verify.”

‘Sounds like a plan.”

They went back to work, but Elera’s mind kept circling back to Lyra’s words. “She’s stronger than she looks, out everyone has limits.”

It felt like a warning. Or maybe a threat disguised as concern. With Lyra, it was hard to tell.

As the sun began to set and the chaos of the day finally started to wind down, Elera found herself standing at the windows of the library, looking out at the ocean. The water was rough today, waves crashing against he cliff face with a violence that matched the turmoil in her mind.

Drakonius came to stand beside her, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him. “Long day,” he said.

Understatement of the century,” Elera replied. “I woke up this morning as a newly outed bestselling author with a relationship drama. Now I’m that plus a woman whose other secret identities are about to be exposed, whose enemies are circling, and whose patient is suddenly healing so fast it defies medical explanation. Oh, and your sister called to maybe apologize or maybe threaten us. I can’t tell which.”

When you put it like that, it does sound overwhelming,” Drakonius agreed. He was quiet for a moment, then added, “Thank you.”

‘For what?”

“For everything. For saving my life, obviously. But also for staying. For not running when things got complicated. For being honest with me even when I was being an idiot. For existing in my life and making it better. He turned to look at her, and the expression on his face made her breath catch. “I know I’m not good at this. At expressing feelings or being vulnerable. But I need you to know that you matter to me. Not as my doctor or as my wife in name only, but as you. Elera. The woman who built cathedrals of words and empires of medicine. The woman who’s brilliant and terrifying and kind. You matter.”

Elera felt tears prick her eyes. “You matter to me too. More than I probably should admit given that we’ve only known each other for a few weeks.”

“Time is relative,” Drakonius said with a small smile. “When you’re dying. weeks can teel like years. And when you’re with the right person, years can feel like minutes. I think we’ve lived about three lifetimes together in the past months.”
