Richard stared at her, unable to fathom how the woman had become so unrecognizable, or why Jane lay limp in her arms. Beside him, the middle-aged man showed a flicker of surprise before his expression returned to one of cold, aloof indifference.
"Renee, what are you doing? Put that hairpin down. And what happened to Jane?" Richard demanded.
Renee looked at him with newfound hope. "Richard! Please, tell them not to take me away. I know I made a mistake. I will cooperate with the investigation, but I cannot go now. I have to save Jane. If I leave, she is dead. I know you have always hated me, but Jane is your cousin. She adores you. For the sake of her calling you brother all these years, please help me!"
Richard frowned as he looked at the girl in her arms. "What is wrong with her? Why does she look like this?"
Despite his dislike for his cousin due to her mother, seeing her lying there devoid of life stirred a sense of genuine concern.
Renee choked back a sob. "It was me. I injected her with the neurotoxin."
"What?" Richard’s eyes widened. "How could you do that to your own daughter?"
Renee shook her head and wept. "I did not mean to! I really did not. It was meant for Lilian, but she used Jane as a shield. Now she is like this."
Richard let out a cold laugh. "Why so surprised to see your husband? Or were you worried I would get in the way of your reunion with the man you have been pining for all these years?"
Renee’s expression shifted, her voice wavering. "You are overthinking things. I was not pining for anyone."
Richard’s lips curled into a mocking sneer. "There is no need to explain. We both know exactly what this marriage is. I was willing to let you keep your title for life as long as you stayed in line. I would have looked the other way, no matter how much filth you were involved in. But you clearly do not know the meaning of the word restraint. You even managed to provoke the old man. Since it has come to this, we might as well end things here."
Renee stared at him, her voice trembling. "What do you mean by that?"
