Everly finally turned her gaze toward Lilian. When she recognized the face, she shrieked in disbelief, “Lilian? What… How are you here? You’re supposed to be in Dracovia!”
Lilian looked her up and down with an amused smirk. “Everly, it’s been over a year. You’ve gotten older, but your IQ clearly hasn’t moved an inch. If you can be here, why can’t I? Is this hotel family–owned or something? And honestly, I told you a year ago to stop screeching. It really doesn’t suit you. You’re pushing twenty–six, a grown woman, so stop trying to act like a starry–eyed teenager. It’s embarrassing. That little performance of yours nearly made me lose my dinner from last night.” She punctuated the sentence with a visible shudder of disgust.
Uriel, watching the girl’s sharp wit in action, had to hide her face in Derrick’s chest to stifle her laughter. She was beyond impressed; anyone who could dismantle both Cary and his granddaughter like this was a genius in her book.
Derrick looked down at his wife and smiled helplessly. It was clear Lilian had completely won her over.
“Don’t push your luck, Lilian!” Everly snapped, her face flushing red. “Things aren’t like they used to be. Sebastian isn’t backing you anymore, so you’d better watch your mouth. This is Murica, not Dracovia. If you keep disrespecting me, I’ll have you locked up. Insulting the nobility here actually carries a penalty.”
Lilian feigned a look of pure terror and turned to Eric. “She’s threatening me! You have to protect me.”
Eric fought back a grin and patted her shoulder reassuringly. “Don’t worry. She won’t touch you. A family of their size is nothing to the Philips family.”
“Are you sure?” Lilian asked, her eyes welling up with mock tears.
Eric nodded firmly. “Absolutely.”
Everly let out a harsh laugh. “I see you’ve already moved on to a new target. I suppose it makes sense, considering Sebastian and I are about to get engaged. You can’t cling to him anymore, so you had to find another meal ticket to fund your lifestyle. I just wonder how long this Eric will put up with you. No prominent family is ever going to let a low–class woman through their front door.”
The surrounding guests cringed at Everly’s arrogance. Even though they knew she was completely in the dark about Lilian’s identity, no one stepped forward to correct her.
In the crowd, Janet watched Everly with a cold smirk. It was exactly as she’d suspected. There was no way this engagement was ever going to happen.
“Is that so?” Lilian smiled coldly at Everly. “So, you’re finally getting your wish and marrying Sebastian. You must have worked so hard for this. I should probably congratulate you on your little dream finally coming true Oh, by the way, tran into a few of your friends on my way in. They were dying to congratulate you, so I took the liberty of bringing them along.”
She turned to Eric. “Have someone bring them in. It would be such a shame if they didn’t get to say congratulations to her face? Then, she looked directly at Sebastian. “Mr. Sebastian, you won’t mind if I invite a few more quests, do you?”
