Sebastian met Cary’s gaze with a look of icy indifference. “The word fear isn’t in my vocabulary. If I had to rely on a strategic marriage just to keep the Austin family afloat, it would only prove I’m incompetent. You clearly don’t know me at all, Cary, I’ve always been a rebel. The more someone tries to strong–arm me, the harder I fight back. I’d rather see us both go down in flames than submit to blackmail.”
“Is that so?” Cary’s voice was deathly quiet. “It sounds like you’ve made your choice. Don’t blame me when I stop playing nice. Whatever catastrophe hits the Austin family next is on you, Sebastian. You have no one to blame but yourself for being so ungrateful. You had your chance and you blew it. Don’t come crawling to me later.”
Sebastian let out a short, mocking laugh as he casually turned the signet ring on his finger. “Then I suppose I should thank you for the opportunity. Unfortunately, I’ve never been very good at doing what I’m told. I’ll pass on your generosity. Besides, your granddaughter is a luxury I can’t afford, mostly because I’ve never had much interest in being a cuckold.”
A wave of snickers broke out across the room. It was a brutal, public execution of Cary’s dignity, leaving the old man’s reputation in tatters.
Standing nearby, Everly felt like the world was collapsing. The humiliation was bad enough, but the heartbreak was worse. She never imagined the man she loved would gut her like this in front of everyone.
Cary’s expression twisted into a predatory grin. “Fine. You want to play dirty? We’ll play dirty. I hope you still feel this smug when the fallout starts.”
He snapped his head toward Everly. “Move it. You’ve embarrassed us enough for one night.” He grabbed Will’s arm for support and began to storm out.
Everly stopped, looking up at Sebastian with raw pain in her eyes. “Are you really going to burn the whole family down for her? Is she honestly worth losing everything? Is she?”
“Yes,” Sebastian said, his voice like flint. “To me, Lilian is priceless. If the price of keeping her is destroying the family legacy, I’ll pay it gladly. Does that answer your question?”
Everly took a sharp breath, the grief on her face hardening into a mask of spite. “Good. Very good. I can’t wait to see how long your eternal love lasts once the Austin family starts bleeding out. Let’s see if you’re still so devoted when everything is gone.”
