He scooped Everly’s limp body into his arms and shot his father a look of pure, gut–wrenching disappointment before turning toward the exit.

“Get back here!” Cary bellowed. “Where do you think you’re going? We aren’t finished yet!”

Will froze for a second, but he didn’t turn around. His voice was like ice. “It’s over, Dad. The Chris family is done. We lost this war! Do you really think there’s a plan left to follow? She’s my daughter. If you won’t save her, I will. As for you… you’re on your own.” With that, he walked out without looking back.

Watching his son leave, Cary seemed to age ten years in an instant. But the shock quickly curdled into a manic, toxic rage.

“Fine! Go! All of you, get the hell out!” he shrieked, laughing hysterically. “I don’t need any of you to finish this! I said I’d wipe the Austin family off the face of the earth, and I meant it!”

He whirled on Sebastian, his face contorted. “Are you happy now? Does it feel good to watch me lose everything? I’m in this position because of you! Because of you, I lost my granddaughter and my son. Because of you, my family empire collapsed in a heartbeat. You’re the reason for all of this, so you’re the one who needs to die!”

His crazed eyes then darted to Lilian. “And you, Lilian! If you hadn’t shown up today, none of this would have spiraled out of control. You’re just as guilty!”

He scanned the terrified crowd, his voice reaching a fever pitch. “And the rest of you! You’re all going to burn! Every single one of you!”

Lilian watched Cary’s breakdown with a sinking feeling. Her brow furrowed; she could sense something catastrophic was about to

happen.

Sure enough, Cary reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black device. He looked at Sebastian with a ghoulish, jagged grin. “Do you know what this is? This is my parting gift to you. I’ve had this entire ballroom rigged with explosives since before the party started.”

The room went deathly silent for a heartbeat before exploding into panicked murmurs. People looked at each other, paralyzed, wondering if the old man was bluffing or if they were standing on a graveyard.

Sebastian’s jaw tightened, his gaze fixed on Cary like a predator.

“The plan was to walk out of here and press this button once I was safe,” Cary continued, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm whisper. “I was going to bury all of you. But it’s not too late. I have nothing left anyway. If you won’t let me have my life, then we’re all going down together!”

His thumb lunged for the button. In that split second, Lilian’s hand blurred. A silver needle hissed through the air, piercing Cary’s wrist with surgical precision. The sudden, white–hot pain forced his hand open, and the remote clattered to the floor.

Lilian didn’t hesitate. She lunged forward, sliding across the floor to snatch the device before he could recover.
