“The wiring is too complex,” Foster said, his voice tight with panic. “There are five primary lines, but the configuration is nothing like the models we’ve trained on. We’re down to forty seconds. Even if the specialists walked through that door right now, it’s too late.”
Cary watched Sebastian with a mocking sneer. “Forty seconds left. You’d better pick a wire fast, or it’s over. Those old fools from the bomb squad aren’t coming, and even if they were, they wouldn’t know how to disarm this. So, go ahead, place your bets. Let’s see if luck is on your side or mine.”
“Shut up,” Lilian hissed, her eyes cutting toward Cary like shards of glass. “If I hear one more word out of you, I’ll make sure those last forty seconds are the most agonizing of your life.”
She stepped closer to the black device. It was her first time seeing a real explosive outside of a television screen. Five different colored wires ran into the core of the box, and the digital display was screaming at thirty–five seconds. Beside her, Sebastian and Foster stood frozen, their brows furrowed as they stared at a puzzle with no clear solution.
Lilian grew quiet for a moment, then looked at Sebastian. “I have a way.”
Sebastian and Foster both looked up at her simultaneously.
“I can put it in that place,” Lilian said, her voice surprisingly calm.
Sebastian understood immediately. His expression darkened into a mask of cold refusal. “No. Absolutely not. I won’t even let you consider it.”
He knew she was talking about the mysterious space hidden within her, but he couldn’t take the risk. He wouldn’t gamble with her life.
“Sebastian, we have less than half a minute!” Lilian pleaded. “If we stay like this, everyone in this room dies. I won’t let that happen. I won’t watch you die. Even if there’s only a one–in–a–million chance, I have to try. The worst that happens is I go back into a coma for a few years.”
“Lilian, get that thought out of your head right now,” Sebastian growled, his gaze piercing. “If you even think about doing something that stupid, I’ll level this building myself right now.”
Their eyes met in a silent clash of wills, filled with frustration, stubbornness, and a shared resolve to face the end together.
“Sir! I found it! I found it!” Foster shouted.
They both snapped their attention back to the device. Foster was pointing at a near–invisible, transparent thread. It was so thin it was almost impossible to see with the naked eye, tucked tightly against the casing right next to the red wire.
That old snake Cary had been cunning. He had spent the last few minutes goading them to pick one of the five colored wires because every single one of them was a trigger.
“Tools,” Sebastian commanded, his face like stone.
Foster grabbed a pair of wire cutters from a nearby agent and pressed them into Sebastian’s hand.
Sebastian carefully hooked the transparent thread with the tip of the cutters. The entire room held its breath, the silence so heavy it was suffocating.
