The ballroom was hollow and silent. Sebastian stood by the floor–to–ceiling window, his tall frame cutting a lonely figure against the backdrop of the city’s neon glow. His dark eyes remained cold, yet they were heavy with a deep, aching longing.
They were so close, yet he couldn’t reach her. He finally understood the agony of being worlds apart while standing in the same room. He thought back to the time Lilian had sat in her car just to catch a glimpse of him in secret; she must have felt this exact same pain.
The clicking of high heels echoed through the empty hall.
A slender figure stepped up beside him. “I never pegged the great head of the Austin family for the brooding type.”
“It’s late, Janet,” Sebastian said, his voice clipped and distant. “Why are you still here?”
Janet laughed softly. “I was on my way out, but I saw you standing here and couldn’t resist. I thought maybe when you heard the heels, you’d hope it was that fiancée of yours.”
A cold smirk played on Sebastian’s lips. “If I couldn’t recognize her footsteps, I wouldn’t deserve to be her fiancé.”
Janet studied his chiseled profile. “She’s impressive. For a moment, I actually thought you’d go through with the engagement to Everly, and I have to admit, I was disappointed in your taste. But the second I saw the way you looked at Lilian, I knew this merger was dead on arrival. I wasn’t wrong.”
‘Is there a point to this?” Sebastian asked. “If not, please leave.”
Janet didn’t take offense. She simply shrugged. “Just a bit of free advice, women rarely mean what they say when they’re angry. When she says she doesn’t want to see you, she’s actually telling you how much she missed you. If she didn’t care, she wouldn’t have traveled halfway across the world. If you actually listen to her and wait for her to calm down you’ll be waiting forever. Stop brooding and go find her.”
She stretched her arms and turned to leave. “Think about it. That’s just a woman’s perspective.”
The doors opened again, and Foster hurried in. He gave a polite nod to the departing Janet before approaching Sebastian. “Sir, it’s done. Cary’s credentials have been delivered to the police station.”
Sebastian pulled his gaze away from the window. “And the other five families?”
“Handled,” Foster confirmed.
“What about the Chris family’s assets?”
“The Royal Family just issued the order,” Foster reported. “Everything has been seized. Between the destruction and the legal freeze, there’s nothing left. I’ve already dispatched teams to begin taking over the interests of the other five families as well.”
Sebastian’s eyes turned icy as he looked back at the city. “Make it quick.”
“Understood,” Foster bowed. He waited for further instructions, but when Sebastian remained silent, he ventured, “Sir… perhaps it’s time for you to head back as well?”
Sebastian was quiet for a moment. “Yes. It is.” He turned to Foster. “Give me the keys.”
Startled, Foster quickly fished the car keys out of his pocket and handed them over.
