Lilian stood up and walked to the window. Staring out at the night sky, she said softly, “I know you’re right. But people are contradictory like that. When it’s your own decision, you can find a thousand reasons to justify it. But when it’s the other person, you expect total transparency. I guess my way of thinking is pretty selfish, too.”
Eric looked at her slender silhouette and stepped up beside her. “It’s not selfishness. It’s just that you both love each other so much that you prioritize the other’s safety above all else. You do it, and Sebastian does it too.”
Lilian’s gaze remained fixed on the distance. “I know how much he loves me. How could I not? But whenever I think about him almost getting engaged to that woman, I just can’t shake this feeling.”
Eric laughed. “You silly girl, that feeling is called jealousy. And you know Sebastian would never actually get engaged to anyone else. He gave you the Austin family heirloom. That’s him declaring you the matriarch of his home. That alone is the ultimate promise. Most people would kill for that kind of commitment, and here you are, still pouting.”
He had been genuinely stunned at the gala when Lilian produced the ring. He knew exactly what a family heirloom of that stature represented. It was a testament to a level of devotion he found almost hard to wrap his head around.
Lilian looked away, her expression a mix of sheepishness and lingering annoyance. “Well, he’s the one who let the engagement rumors spread. You can’t blame me for being a woman and getting jealous.”
Eric gave her a playful pat on the shoulder. “Fine, it’s all his fault. We’ll ignore him for a bit. He deserves the penance. But promise me you won’t let this drive a real wedge between you. It’s not worth it.”
“I know,” Lilian nodded.
After chatting for a few more minutes, Eric left the room. Just as he reached the bottom of the stairs, Sebastian strode through the front door with the butler trailing anxiously behind him.
“Sir, I tried to stop him,” the butler stammered, looking at Eric. “Mr. Austin insisted on coming in.”
Eric nodded calmly. “It’s alright, Lou. Go get some rest. I’ll handle things here.” Once the butler left, Eric turned to Sebastian with a knowing smirk. “A bit late for a house call, isn’t it? What brings you here, Sebastian?”
“Where is she?” Sebastian asked bluntly. “I need to see her.”
Eric walked over to the bar and poured himself a drink. “I seem to recall Lilian saying she didn’t want to see your face tonight.”
Sebastian’s brow furrowed, his voice dropping an octave. “I know she’s angry, and I understand why. But I won’t let her go to bed like this; it’ll ruin her sleep. Now that the danger is gone, there’s no way I’m letting her stay here and ignore me when she’s right under my
nose.”
Eric took a slow sip of his wine. “The danger might be gone, but have you considered how much your method hurt her? No woman- wants to see her fiancé’s name linked to another woman in the headlines.”
