Eric laughed, though he looked a little exasperated. “Look at you, getting cheeky with me already. As long as you know I’ve got your back, I guess my work here is done.”
He turned his attention toward Sebastian. “Everything is wrapped up on this end, so what’s the move? Are you heading back home, or staying a few more days? Grandpa called earlier asking for an update. He’s definitely been losing sleep over this.”
Lilian’s eyes widened. Between the chaos and the fallout, she’d completely forgotten to check in with Merrick. “Did you tell him things are settled and we’re safe?”
“I took care of it,” Eric assured her with a smile. “But he misses you. That much was obvious.”
Sebastian went quiet for a moment, thinking through the logistics. “I’m taking Lilian to see my parents and my grandpa this afternoon. He’s been dying to meet his future granddaughter–in–law. After that, we’re clear. I’ve already got teams handling the corporate transition.”
Lilian froze. “Wait, today? You didn’t give me any warning! I don’t even have a gift ready.”
Sebastian caught her gaze, his expression softening into something deeply intimate. “You are the gift, Lilian. Believe me, they won’t be looking for anything else.”
“He’s right,” Eric added, watching them with an amused grin. “He’s already making off with the pride of the Philips family. That’s more than enough. Since that’s the plan, let’s take today to decompress and head home tomorrow.”
With the schedule set, Sebastian and Lilian left the Philips estate.
The car glided through the streets before pulling up to a set of massive, intricate wrought–iron gates. They swung open slowly, allowing the car to roll onto the sprawling grounds of the Austin estate.
Lilian stared out the window. The lawns seemed to go on forever, perfectly manicured by a small army of gardeners. Clusters of vibrant flowers lined the drive, and a light, elegant fragrance drifted through the air, instantly calming the nerves she didn’t know
she had.
When the main house finally came into view at the end of the long drive, Lilian couldn’t help but gasp. “It’s a castle. It looks exactly like the ones in the stories I read as a kid.”
Sebastian saw the wonder in her eyes and smiled. “If you like it, we can stay here whenever we’re in town.”
“I thought you had your own place?” Lilian asked, sounding a bit confused. “We didn’t stay here the last time we were here. Don’t you live with your family?”
Sebastian brought the car to a smooth stop. “I moved out a long time ago. I value my independence, so I only come by for visits But like I said, if you’re a fan of the architecture, we can make it a regular thing.” He leaned over to unbuckle her seatbelt for her.
Lilian shook her head quickly. “Actually, never mind. Living in a place this big makes me feel like even walking to the dining room would be an Olympic sport.”
She stepped out of the car, and Sebastian took her hand, leading her toward the entrance. As they reached the doors, two lines of servants bowed in perfect unison. “Welcome back, Mr. Sebastian. Good afternoon, Ms Lilian.”
Lilian nearly choked on her own breath. She could handle the formal greeting for him, but hearing her name spoken with such practiced, reverent ceremony felt surreal. “Wait… did they just greet me like that?”
