“That’s my girl,” Bran said with a laugh. “By the time you and Sebastian tie the knot, I expect to share a real drink with your grandfather.”
Lilian felt a sudden heat climb up her neck, her cheeks flushing a deep pink.
“Grandpa, stop,” Uriel teased, catching Lilian’s eye with a knowing smile. “You’re going to scare her off. She just walked through the door and you’re already pushy about the wedding. Give it one more drink and you’ll be asking when they’re moving into the nursery.”
“And why not?” Bran countered. “We’re not getting any younger. Of course we want to see you two settled with kids. I want a great- grandchild to spoil before I’m through. It would be the highlight of my life. Wouldn’t it, Sebastian?”
Sebastian’s dark eyes glittered as he caught Lilian’s hand. “Grandpa is right. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get that great- grandchild sooner rather than later.”
Uriel just shook her head at the two of them, a resigned but happy smile on her face.
Lilian watched the elderly man, finding it hard to believe this gentle soul was once the legendary, iron–fisted powerhouse of the Austin family. There wasn’t a trace of severity in him; he was just a sharp–witted grandfather with a warm heart. The nerves that had been eating at her all morning had completely vanished.
By the time they prepared to leave, the sun had already dipped below the skyline.
Bran held Lilian’s hand as they walked to the car. “Make sure you come back and visit. It’s rare I find someone as sharp as you to talk to. Knowing Sebastian has you by his side… it puts my mind at ease.”
Lilian smiled back. “I promise. I’ve learned more just sitting with you today than I have in months. I’ve really loved being here.”
Bran patted her hand and then firmly placed it into Sebastian’s palm. “Protect her. Finding a woman like this is the luckiest thing that will ever happen to you.”
Sebastian’s expression softened. “I know, Grandpa. I will.”
As they drove away, Lilian watched the city lights blur past her window. For the first time, she felt a genuine pang of envy toward Sebastian. He had parents who clearly adored each other and a grandfather who was the definition of kindness. It was a beautiful life.
Sebastian reached over, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. “So, Grandpa is asking about the wedding. Have you given it any thought? We could always do it here, you know.”
Lilian shot him a playful look. “In your dreams. We agreed to wait until I’m twenty. You’re just going to have to be patient.”
Sebastian opened his mouth to argue, but Lilian’s phone cut him off.
She checked the caller ID. “Karina? It’s early in Dracovia. Why is she calling me now?” She hit the speaker. “Karina, what’s up?”
“Lilian, we have a crisis,” Karina’s voice crackled through, tight with stress. “Every major paper in the city ran a front page hit piece this morning. They’re claiming the Skyreach Real Estate plot is legally compromised and environmentally toxic.”
Lilian’s expression shifted instantly, her brow furrowing into a sharp line. “What? That’s impossible. That land is clean. This is a coordinated attack. Have you tracked the source yet?”
