Lilian scanned the documents, her eyes narrowing as she flipped through the pages. “This news agency is just a puppet. Janus is the one pulling the strings, though that won’t stop us from holding both of them accountable.”
“Janus!” Karina exclaimed, though the shock quickly faded into realization. “I should have known. He’s been hounding us to sell that land for weeks, and Ryan shot him down every time. I guess the groundbreaking ceremony pushed him over the edge. This is a desperate attempt at sabotage.”
Ryan remained unconvinced. “But the smell out there… it’s real. There is definitely something pungent coming from that drainage ditch. I had the labs take samples yesterday, but we won’t have the results for another forty–eight hours.”
Lilian twirled a pen between her fingers, deep in thought. “A bad smell doesn’t automatically mean hydrogen sulfide. These articles are running without a shred of scientific proof. I’m willing to bet it’s something else entirely, and I know for a fact that the land isn’t toxic.” She trailed off, a nagging feeling scratching at the back of her mind. She was overlooking something, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
“What’s the move, then?” Karina asked. “The story is spreading like wildfire. Kingston is already convinced Skyreach is sitting on a poison pit. If we don’t act, it’s going to tank the entire project’s credibility.”
“Relax,” Lilian said, her voice steady. “Sensationalist news without evidence has a short shelf life. Once we pinpoint the actual cause, the rumors will collapse under their own weight.”
A knock at the door interrupted them. The secretary stepped in, looking hesitant. “Pardon the interruption. Mr. Ryan, Janus from Soren Corp is downstairs. He’s asking to see you.”
“I thought I told you to reject his request yesterday?” Ryan said, frowning.
“I did,” the secretary explained. “But he showed up in person today. He’s insisting on a meeting.”
Lilian didn’t hesitate. “Put him in the conference room. Tell him Ryan will be with him shortly.”
“Understood.” The secretary nodded and withdrew.
Karina turned to Lilian, confused. “What could he possibly want right now?”
Lilian’s lips curled into a cold, predatory smile. “He’s here to play the hero, of course. He went through all this trouble to manufacture a crisis just so he could walk in and offer us a way out. He thinks he can pressure us into selling the land as a favor to Skyreach. He gets the property, looks like a savior, and kills two birds with one stone. It’s a classic play.”
“Then why let me see him?” Ryan asked.
“Because he went to all this effort,” Lilian said, her eyes flashing with mockery. “It would be rude not to let him deliver his performance. Besides, I want to see exactly how he plans to manipulate us into giving him what he wants.”
Down in the VIP lounge, Janus was leaned back on the designer sofa, looking completely at ease as he sipped a cup of coffee,
His assistant paced the room, looking annoyed. “This Ryan guy has some nerve. He blew off the appointment yesterday, and now that you’re here in person, he’s leaving us to rot in a waiting room. What is he playing at?”

Janus caught his reflection in the dark coffee, a smirk playing on his lips. “Think about it. Their company is facing a PR nightmare.
