Lyla walked straight in, her eyes landing on Janus. “I need to talk to you.”

Taking the hint, the assistant quickly gathered his things. “Sir, I’ll head back to the office. I’ll leave you two to it.” He hurried out, closing the door behind him.
Janus frowned, his patience thin. “What is it now?”
Lyla sat on the sofa opposite him, her expression tense. “I struggled with whether or not to tell you this. I didn’t want to drive a wedge between you and Rowan. But if you lose the inheritance, our side of the family is going to have a very difficult time surviving under his thunb.”
“Get to the point,” Janus said.
Lyla lowered her voice. “Grandpa never intended to choose you. He thinks you’re too arrogant and impossible to control. He’s been backing Rowan from the very beginning. If it wasn’t for the pressure from the board, he wouldn’t have even given you this chance.”
Janus’s expression turned icy. “How do you know this?”
“I was at the old estate a couple of days ago,” Lyla said. “I overheard them talking outside the study. They were discussing the plan to use this media scandal to dismantle Skyreach and take the land. I don’t like Lilian, but the way Grandpa is pulling the strings behind your back… it’s chilling.”
Janus leaned back, staring out the window as he processed this. After a long silence, he spoke. “I’ve got it. Don’t mention a word of this to Mom or Dad. They’ll lose their heads and go confront the old man, which will only make things worse.”
Lyla nodded. “I won’t. Just make sure you move fast. If they succeed with this plan, we’re finished.”
“I know. Now go home.”
After Lyla left, Janus sat motionless. He had always suspected Robert favored Rowan, but he hadn’t realized the betrayal ran this deep. To know that he was never even a candidate in the old man’s eyes stung. But if Robert wanted to rig the game, Janus would just have to break the board.
He picked up his phone and dialed a number he rarely used.
In the executive office of Empire Group, Sebastian glanced at his vibrating phone. He raised an eyebrow at the caller ID before picking up. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I want to talk about a partnership,” Janus said, his voice flat.
Sebastian paused, his hand hovering over a stack of documents. “That’s a surprise. I didn’t think you’d ever come to me for help.”
Janus let out a dry laugh. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend. For the sake of mutual interest, I’m willing to work with a rival.”
Sebastian set his pen down and leaned back in his leather chair. “I’m listening.”
