"Of course, ma'am."
Lauren continued to stroke her stomach, her mind racing with a thousand different ways to make her daughter smile again.
When Jasper walked in, Nicole and Amelia were in the middle of a game.
"Jasper, what did my mom want?" Amelia asked, pausing the game to look at him.
"She found out Jaron has a girlfriend."
Amelia bolted upright, her eyes wide with panic. "Did it upset her? Is the baby okay?"
"She's fine, don't worry."
"You stay here with Nicole," Amelia said, still looking uneasy. "I'm going to go grab some snacks. I'll be right back."
She hurried out, still feeling a pang of guilt. She knew her parents had heard her crying last night; to save her pride, they hadn't come in, but they had stayed outside the door, silently offering support by sliding tissues under it.
"Oh no! I missed the mushroom!"
Nicole's face fell with disappointment as she turned back to the screen. "Watch out, here comes the duck... and there it is. Game over."
As Nicole frowned at the screen, Jasper reached out and gently smoothed the crease between her brows.
"So, Ms. Cross knows?" Nicole asked.
"She does."
"Well, even if Jaron regrets it later and wants Amelia back, I don't think she should take him," Nicole said firmly.
"Why not?"
"It would just be... wrong. It would always be in the back of her mind." Jasper went quiet for a moment as she continued, "If Amelia stays with him, she's the one who's going to end up suffering."
"You really think so?"
"Of course! I never realized he was so shallow. Some pretty girl confesses to him, and he just loses his head? There are plenty of pretty girls in the world—the guy clearly has no principles."
Jasper gave her cheek a playful squeeze. "Still mad?"
"I'm not mad," Nicole insisted.
"Jaron actually asked me what he did to offend you."
"It's not anger, exactly. It's just... disappointing. I really thought he liked Amelia. I don't get how he could just go and start something with someone else."
"It was his choice," Jasper said simply. He had tried to tell his friend to think things through, but the more he pushed, the less Jaron listened.
"I just hope he doesn't regret it later," Nicole muttered. "Because if he does, he can cry all he wants. I'm not helping him."
Jasper brushed her hair back over her shoulder and smiled. "Let's stop talking about him. Want to play?"
The weekend flew by, and Nicole and the others returned to Azure Peak University.
Amelia had been buried in work, juggling her club activities and a second major. She was constantly on the move until Jaron finally intercepted her.
"What's going on?" Amelia asked, looking up at him with a puzzled expression.
"My dad gave me an ultimatum," Jaron said, staring intently at her as if trying to read her reaction. "He's forcing me to break up with Tiffany."
