Chapter 60 A Personal Request
“You ate this?”
Jax scrambled backward, his voice hitting a panicked pitch that echoed through the living room.
“Uncle. It’s a box of pastries. You’re not actually going to kill me over a box of pastries, are you?” “Did I or did I not say no one touches this?”
Fir
Elias had specifically brought that box back last night when he’d stopped by to grab some documents. guarded it carefully. And now two pieces were missing.
The butler, Quinn Parker, wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead and spoke carefully, “Mr. Cross, I d pass along your instruction. It’s just–Jax didn’t get in until very late last night, so—”
He caught Elias‘ gaze and felt his heart stutter.
He’d served Elias since the day he was born.
This was the first time he’d ever seen him this furious over a box of pastries.
“Uncle. I’ll buy you a hundred boxes. Just–breathe, okay?”
Jax felt the temperature in the room drop several degrees.
Why hadn’t he just gone back to his own place last night? It was only ten minutes away.
Usually, he could stay here for a month and barely cross paths with his uncle.
And since when was his uncle this stingy?
He’d just been hungry. He saw food. He ate it.
“Come here. Let’s spar.”
Jax’s blood ran cold. He tried to make a run for it, but Elias caught him by the collar and dragged him back.
“Uncle! We’re family! Your own blood! Go easy on me! Mom! Mom, come save me! Grandpa! Ah-!”
Quinn winced slightly. He reached for the phone, then set it back down.
Some things were just meant to be.
“Ring…”
The phone chose that moment to save someone’s life.
Quinn answered with practiced poise. “Hello, Cloudreach Manor.”
“Quinn, it’s me.”
Chapter 60 A Personal Request
Amelia’s voice came through the line.
“Miss Cross.”
“I heard Elias rescued Jax from almost becoming some backwoods cult’s sacrificial groom.”
Quinn nearly choked, but decades of training kept his expression neutral. “That’s correct.”
“Ha! Elias has no sense of humor. Why didn’t he stay for the ceremony? Could’ve at least toasted be dragging him out.”
“Where is he? I want to thank him.”
‘Mr. Cross is currently–he’s-”
“With his freakishly rigid schedule, there’s no way he’s still asleep. Please tell me he didn’t already go office. Tell me my brother isn’t that much of a workaholic monster.”
Amelia grinned, deeply grateful for her über–competent younger brother. It meant she could live he exactly how she wanted.
‘Miss Cross. Mr. Cross is currently… disciplining Jax.”
‘He screwed up again? Tell Elias to hit him harder. Don’t hold back on my account.”
Amelia paused, frowning. “What did my useless, money–draining disaster of a son do this time?”
It didn’t make sense.
[ax wasn’t stupid enough to provoke Elias again.
‘He ate two of Mr. Cross‘ pastries.”
Amelia went completely still.
‘Two pastries? Even if they were made from flour grown on Mars, Elias wouldn’t care that much.
‘Quinn. Are you absolutely sure my brother hasn’t been replaced by some kind of imposter?”
‘Miss Cross, Mr. Cross is right here.”
Quinn quickly turned toward him. “Mr. Cross, Miss Cross is on the line.”
Elias‘ mood hadn’t improved. His voice, always cool, now sounded like ice blocks hurled across the line, smacking Amelia in the face.
“What?”
One word.
“Elias. Have we gone bankrupt?”
LCI UU A Personal Request
“Control your son.”
“Two pastries. It’s really not that serious. Who are you and what have you done with my brother?”
Elias rolled his eyes and hung up.
Amelia exhaled slowly, pressing a hand to her chest.
Yeah. That temper. Definitely my brother.
But trying to beat her son to death over two pastries?
Something was off. Something was very, very off.
“Amelia, sweetheart, you want to go see the glaciers tomorrow?”
Amelia shook off the man’s arm, handed him a credit card, and patted his chest. “I’m bored now. Late
The man’s face fell instantly.
