Chapter 98 A Father’s Confession
Mark shook his head. “It’s nothing.”
Leo didn’t push, though one eyebrow lifted slightly. “Dad, standing up to Aunt Amber like that–you’re not worried about what Grandpa will say?”
Mark didn’t answer the question.
“Give those tickets to your uncle. The whole family’s going to the festival this time. Maybe it’ll help patch things up.”
Leo wanted to point out all the reasons that probably wouldn’t happen, but he looked at his father’s face and swallowed the words.
When Derek woke up, he was wrapped in bandages like a mummy. The moment he saw who was standing in his hospital room, his visible eyes went wide with panic. He tried to shrink back, but there was nowhere to go.
“Wh–what do you want?”
Stella pulled a chair over and sat down, arms crossed, fixing him with a cold stare.
“Let’s make a deal.”
kind?”
of desperate hope ignited behind Derek’s fearful eyes.
You answer my questions honestly, and I’ll make sure no one lays a hand on you again before your execution.”
The memory of those kicks and punches made his whole body ache. He was going to die anyway–this just meant doing it with fewer broken bones.
“What do you want to know?”
“Why did you go to Jenston?”
Surprise flickered across Derek’s face, visible even through the bandages.
But he was dead either way. Maybe trading information for better treatment was worth it.
“How… How’s Jasmine?”
“She’s looking at detention. All those false accusations she filed.”
“I’ll tell you what you want. But my daughter doesn’t go to juvie.”
Stella’s eyebr ed slightly. “I can drop the defamation charges.”

Someone from the Moore family?
Jasper’s eyes went cold. He’d been blind. Stupid. Missing something so obvious, and Nicole had paid for it
with her life.
Nicole.
Just her name made his chest feel like it was being eaten alive from the inside out.

Azure Medical Center.
“Stella. Where did you go?”
Frederick walked toward her, concern etched across his face. Stella glanced past him at the middle–aged couple standing a few feet away, their eyes studying her just as carefully as she studied them.
“Sweetheart.” Sylvie Sullivan’s voice caught as she reached for Stella’s hand, her eyes glistening. “You’ve been through so much.”
She pulled Stella into a hug, arms wrapping tight around her. “I’m your aunt. All these years… you must have had such a hard time.”
Stella didn’t pull away. Physical closeness had never come easily to her, but something about this embrace felt different. Warm. Real.
“It’s okay now.” Sylvie’s hand smoothed over Stella’s hair. “You’re home. No one’s going to hurt you ever again.”
“Aunt Sylvie.”
“Yeah.” Sylvie’s eyes welled up. “That’s my girl.”
She’d started dating Bruce Shaw when Nicole was only five. By the time Nicole was ten, she’d married into the Shaw family. Those happy memories flashed through her mind like yesterday–Nicole laughing, Nicole teasing, Nicole alive. Now she was gone. Taken. Murdered. The word still didn’t feel real.
Bruce reached out and gently patted Stella’s head, his voice thick. “You’re back now. That’s what matters. You’re back.”
“And this is your uncle, Bruce.” Sylvie gestured, wiping at her eyes. Every time she looked at Stella, she saw Nicole. It hurt and healed all at once.
“Uncle Bruce.”
