“A deal?” Lydia scoffed. “What do I have left to trade? I’m a convicted criminal and a discarded pawn.”

“Everyone has value,” the woman said, casually stirring her coffee. “For instance, your hatred for the Langford family, your hatred for Lyra, and… your hatred for Evelyn Sullivan.”

Lydia’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Who the hell are you?”

“Who I am is irrelevant.” The woman set down her cup and met Lydia’s gaze directly. “What matters is that I can get you out of here early. Not just parole—I can completely expunge your record. It’ll be like none of this ever happened.”

Lydia’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. “What’s the catch?”

“It’s very simple,” the woman smiled. “Someday, I’ll need a favor. Don’t worry, no murder or arson, nothing illegal. It might just be something small—delivering an item, passing along a message, or saying the right words at the right time in a specific setting.”

Lydia stared hard at her. “Why choose me?”

“Because you have no way out.” The woman’s voice was light, but every word felt like a calculated stab. “The Langfords abandoned you. The Lancasters despise you. Even your precious sister is too busy throwing herself at Christian to care about you. Your only value right now is your rage—your hatred for everyone who wronged you.”

She paused, then added, “And, of course, your identity. You’re still a Langford by blood, even if you’re an outcast. In certain circles, your presence will be far more convenient than anyone else’s.”

Lydia went silent.

She looked at the effortlessly elegant woman through the glass, noting the terrifyingly confident glint in her eyes. The woman was right—she had absolutely no safety net left.

Every single day in this prison was a waking nightmare. She was sick of the brutish inmates, sick of the vile food, sick of having every shred of her dignity stripped away. She was only in her twenties. She refused to rot in this hellhole!

“I accept.” Lydia practically ground the words through her teeth. “Get me out of here, and I’ll do whatever you want.”

The woman smiled. It was a beautiful smile, but it sent an involuntary shiver down Lydia’s spine. “Excellent. It’s a pleasure doing business with you.”

She stood up, pausing just before walking away. “A lawyer will visit you shortly. And remember our agreement—you never met me today, and this conversation never happened.”

The woman vanished, the sharp click of her heels fading down the bleak corridor.

Lydia stood there, clutching the receiver, her palms slick with sweat.

She didn’t know who the woman was, what her endgame was, or what twisted favor she would eventually demand. But none of that mattered.

What mattered was that she was getting out.

She was going to leave this wretched place, breathe free air again, and… get revenge.

Yes. Revenge.
