"Absolutely not!" Madeline glared. "You have every right to half of the marital assets! The Lancasters are loaded, it'd be a waste not to take it! You've slaved away in that house for three years, waiting on them hand and foot. Even if they don't appreciate you, you've certainly paid your dues!"
"Maddy," Evelyn said softly, though her eyes were resolute. "I don't want anything more to do with them. A clean break is best. Besides, you know as well as I do that Christian and I haven't been intimate in our three years of marriage, and it's not like I'm hurting for money. There's just no need."
Madeline wanted to argue, but seeing the deep peace in her friend's eyes—a sense of total indifference—she finally sighed. "Fine. What are your plans now?"
"I'm going to San Francisco," Evelyn said, a faint glimmer finally sparking in her eyes. "I want to open a flower shop. Just a small storefront with massive windows. I'll sell fresh flowers in the morning, pour coffee in the afternoon, and at night... I'll lock the doors, listen to music, and read."
"When are you leaving?"
"In a few days. Once..." Evelyn paused, "Once I tie up a few loose ends."
They chatted for a little while longer before paying the check and leaving.
The restaurant staff respectfully held the door open for them. Although Madeline's mobility was restricted, she walked elegantly, leaning on an intricately designed sandalwood cane. Evelyn walked beside her, and the two strolled leisurely toward the elevators.
Metropolitan Plaza was New York's premier luxury shopping destination, and it was packed with weekend afternoon crowds. The fifth floor housed upscale dining and home goods, while the lower levels featured various designer boutiques. Massive art installations were suspended in the central atrium, and sunlight streamed through the glass dome, casting dappled shadows across the polished floor.
Just as they reached the children's toy section on the third floor, a familiar voice drifted over.
"Leo, do you like this one? I'll buy it for you."
The voice was warm and entirely doting—a voice Evelyn had endured for three years. It belonged to her mother-in-law, Penelope Lancaster.
