The temporary office on the sixth floor of the city hospital.

The room was small, roughly two hundred square feet. A single desk, one chair, and a basic file rack. A neat stack of consultation reports, a laptop, and a thermos sat on the desk. Outside the window lay the hospital courtyard, where the leaves of a few old locust trees rustled gently in the autumn breeze.

It was the makeshift office the hospital director had provided for Evelyn—simple and clean, just enough space for her to review charts and write up medical records.

At four-thirty in the afternoon, sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting striped shadows across her desk.

Evelyn had just finished sorting the last batch of consultation notes when her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen—Christian.

She didn't answer immediately. Instead, she filed her reports away and shut her laptop before finally picking up the phone and pressing answer.

"Hello," she said, her voice utterly devoid of emotion.

"Evelyn," Christian's voice came through the receiver. The background was dead silent. "We need to talk."

"If it's about the divorce, fine," Evelyn leaned back in her chair, staring out the window. "If not, there's no need."

The line went quiet for two seconds.

"It's not about the divorce," Christian said. "We've been married for three years, do you really have nothing else to say to me?"

Evelyn idly spun a pen between her fingers, her tone remaining flat. "No."

"Evelyn Sullivan!" Christian's voice flared in anger before he forced it back down. "Three years together, and you're really going to be this cold-blooded?"

"Christian," Evelyn set the pen down. Her voice was faint, but every syllable rang clear. "The day you brought Lyra Langford and that child into the Lancaster estate, any words we had left died."

"That was a mistake!" Christian's voice was laced with suppressed frustration. "I can explain everything about Leo, it was..."

"I don't need an explanation," Evelyn cut him off. "It doesn't matter anymore."

She could hear a heavy inhale on the other end of the line.

A few seconds later, Christian's tone turned ice-cold, dripping with an overt threat. "Evelyn, think this through carefully. If you insist on this divorce, I won't approve the loan for Sullivan Holdings next month."

The office was quiet, so quiet she could hear her own pulse.

Evelyn watched the locust tree outside, a single withered leaf drifting slowly to the ground.

She remembered her father collapsing to the floor three years ago, begging her to marry Christian to save the bankrupt Sullivan Holdings. She had agreed back then—not for her father, but because of what her grandmother had said on her deathbed: "Evelyn, the Sullivan family is your grandfather's life's work."

It had been three years.

She had saved Sullivan Holdings, but lost herself in the process.

"Christian," she finally spoke, her voice as calm as if stating a simple fact. "Do whatever you want."

The line instantly went dead silent.

Then, Christian's voice dropped, low and dangerous. "What did you just say?"

"I said, do whatever you want," Evelyn repeated, pronouncing every word with deliberate clarity. "Do whatever you want to Sullivan Holdings. But this marriage is over."

"Evelyn Sullivan! Don't you dare regret this!"
