Lyra bit her lip, a flicker of hesitation crossing her eyes before she finally nodded. "Then... alright. Thank you, Christian."
"Don't mention it," Christian said, hitting a button on the intercom. "Harrison, come in here."
Moments later, the door swung open, and a young man in a sharp charcoal suit and wire-rimmed glasses walked in. He looked to be in his early thirties, standing tall with an aura of total composure.
"Mr. Lancaster," Harrison stopped at the desk, his gaze professional and respectful.
"This is Lyra Langford," Christian gestured to Lyra. "Starting tomorrow, she will be training in the executive suite. Make the arrangements, and have Ms. Miller mentor her."
Harrison turned his attention to Lyra, an imperceptible flash of scrutiny in his eyes, though his face remained a mask of polite indifference. "Understood, Mr. Lancaster. Ms. Langford, what time works best for you tomorrow?"
"Would nine o'clock be alright?" Lyra stood up and offered Harrison a polite nod. "Thank you for the trouble, Harrison."
"No trouble at all," Harrison replied. "Tomorrow at nine, I'll have Ms. Miller waiting for you in the lobby."
"Thank you."
Harrison turned back to Christian. "Was there anything else, sir?"
"That's all. Back to work."
"Yes, sir."
Harrison turned and left, pulling the door shut behind him.
The office was once again empty save for the two of them.
Lyra approached the desk, looking at Christian with eyes swimming in gratitude. "Christian, thank you, really. I know asking for this right now might have been inappropriate, but I..."
"It's fine," Christian cut her off, sounding exhausted. "Head home for now. Be here on time tomorrow."
Lyra nodded, but made no move to leave. She hesitated, then asked softly, "Christian, tonight... do you want to pick Leo up together? Penelope took him to his early education class, and she said it ends at five-thirty."
Christian checked his watch. It was four-fifty.
He stayed silent for a few seconds as Evelyn's text—Tomorrow at 9 AM. The County Courthouse—flashed across his mind.
That nauseating wave of frustration surged in his chest once more.
"Fine." He stood up and grabbed his suit jacket. "Wait a minute, I just need to finish this file."
"Okay, take your time," Lyra said meekly, sinking back onto the sofa.
Christian sat back down and opened the folder, but the words completely blurred on the page.
Lyra sat quietly on the sofa, her gaze drifting out to the city skyline. The sun was sinking, painting the glass skyscrapers in brilliant gold.
The moment Christian looked down at his paperwork, the corners of her mouth twitched up into a nearly invisible smirk.
It was so slight, it almost seemed like a trick of the light.
But the vicious glint in her eyes betrayed her absolute thrill.
It worked.
Phase one, complete.
