A sharp, numbing pain shot up Christian's arm, forcing his fingers to instantly pop open. He stared in absolute bewilderment at his suddenly powerless hand, then looked up at Evelyn, who had stepped back and was coldly rubbing her reddened wrist. It was as if he were staring at a total stranger.

Evelyn shook out her aching wrist, the stark, purplish bruises already blossoming on her pale skin. She didn't spare Christian another glance, treating him like nothing more than a foul gust of wind. Turning to Arthur, who was still standing off to the side in shock, her tone returned to a perfectly composed, yet undeniable cadence. "Arthur, is Lawrence in his study?"

Arthur snapped out of his daze, nodding frantically. "Yes, yes, Mr. Lancaster is waiting for you..."

Evelyn strode right past him, heading straight for the study. Her steps were steady, her spine ramrod straight, as if the violent confrontation a second ago had never even happened.

As she brushed past Christian, her footsteps faltered for a fraction of a second. Turning her head slightly, she delivered her parting words in an icy whisper meant only for him. "Christian, the divorce papers will be finalized today. Legally speaking, we are about to become total strangers. Who I'm with and what I do is absolutely none of your business. As for being dirty..." She scoffed. "At least the man I choose is cleaner than you."

With that, she didn't linger another second. She pushed open the heavy mahogany door of the study and walked inside, leaving Christian standing paralyzed in the dead center of the hallway.
