According to Sun Family’s plan, she intended to take Yan Yile directly to the Prince Residence. In her view, as the Princess Consort’s second aunt, it was only fitting that she be entertained by the Prince Residence upon her arrival in Xiliang.
Unfortunately, her plan sounded good, but it was disrupted by Han Xinran.
Ever since finding out that Sun Family and Yan Yile were coming, Han Xinran had people watching at the city gate, and Yan Wenxiu also got some help from the gatekeepers.
Sun Family’s thick-skinned nature was something both Yan Wenxiu and Han Xinran were very familiar with; they understood her character all too well and feared that upon her arrival, she would go directly to Daohua.
"Big sister is now the Princess Consort. Every move she makes is observed by all, and as an elder, a visit from her second aunt would be difficult for her to refuse."
"Big sister is married off. After entering the Prince Residence, the Yan Family hasn’t been much help to her. How could we bother her with Yan Family matters again and again?"
That was exactly what Yan Wenxiu said to Han Xinran. Hence, not long after Sun Family presented her travel permit to the city guards, Han Xinran received the news.
Hearing that Sun Family truly intended to head straight for the Prince Residence, Han Xinran promptly took Yan Yihuan to intercept them.
One street away from the Prince Residence, Han Xinran’s carriage blocked Sun Family and Yan Yile’s path.
"Second aunt, fourth sister, you’ve finally arrived. How come you didn’t give us advance notice?" Han Xinran said with a smiling face as she descended from her carriage.
Seeing that it was her eldest daughter and niece-in-law, Sun Family also alighted from the carriage with a smile.
In front of the carriage, Han Xinran engaged in warm and thoughtful small talk with Sun Family, interrupting her several times when she tried to bring up visiting the Prince Residence.
"Second aunt, you and the fourth sister must be tired from your journey. Please, come back to the residence with me to rest."
Standing by, Yan Yihuan realized that her sister-in-law did not want their mother and sister to visit the Prince Residence, feeling a bit uneasy, but still smiling and together with Han Xinran, led her mother and sister back to the Yan Residence.
Throughout the whole ordeal, Yan Yile sat in the carriage without alighting or uttering a single word, simply glancing several times at Han Xinran through the carriage curtain, her lips curled into a sarcastic smile.
"Wow, this residence of yours is really nice, even better than the estate we lived in at the Beijing Suburbs. It’s hard to believe that grandmother is still worried every day that you would be suffering here."
Once they reached the Yan Residence, Sun Family entered and began to look around.
Just as Han Xinran was about to make a polite remark, she was interrupted by a sudden voice from behind.
"The eldest brother is the legitimate firstborn of the Yan Family, the most promising person in the family, oh, I misspoke, the most promising should be the eldest sister."
"She’s so prestigious and delicate, even a slight bump would greatly concern our grandmother, unlike us tough-skinned ones who couldn’t possibly compare."
With these words, Yan Yihuan furrowed her brows. Before she could say anything, Sun Family spoke first: "What nonsense are you talking about, girl? Seems like you’ve been muddled by the carriage ride."
After saying that, she feigned annoyance and lightly smacked Yan Yile, then smiled again at Han Xinran.
The smile on Han Xinran’s face had disappeared, as she gave Yan Yile a cool look: "I saw that the fourth sister was silent the whole way here; I thought she might have changed over the years. But looking at you now, it seems you haven’t changed at all."
Yan Yile, sensing an insinuation about her and her divorce in Han Xinran’s words, looked at her haughtily: "Why should I change? On what grounds must I change? Eldest sister-in-law, please clarify your words."
At that, Han Xinran laughed sarcastically, no longer humoring her, and directly said: "Fourth sister, you’ve been full of sarcasm the moment you entered. What, have I, as your eldest sister-in-law, wronged you in some way?"
Yan Yihuan, seeing Han Xinran’s stern face, grew anxious and hurriedly pulled at Yan Yile, signaling her to calm down.
Sun Family was also at the side, incessantly signaling to her with her eyes.
Unfortunately, Yan Yile was unappreciative and shook off Yan Yihuan, looking at Han Xinran with a cold laugh: "I’m sarcastic, but wasn’t it you, elder sister-in-law, who looked down on us from your high horse?"
Han Xinran was speechless: "How have I looked down on you?"
Yan Yile sneered repeatedly: "Mother and I were going to visit elder sister’s residence, why did you obstruct us? Do you think we are too embarrassing, not worthy of setting foot in the Prince Residence? You were in such a hurry to block our way!"
Han Xinran responded with an angry laugh: "You still have the nerve to ask this, I’ll ask you, did you inform us prior to your arrival in Xiliang? Even if that’s ignored, did you send a formal announcement before going to the Prince Residence?"
At the side, Sun Family couldn’t help but mutter: "Given our relationship with Daohua, is there really a need to send a formal announcement?"
Han Xinran was truly at her wits’ end with this absurd mother and daughter: "Even amongst relatives, proper etiquette is required. Arriving without notice is utterly lacking in propriety."
At this unfortunate moment, the Sun Family still complained, "This Xinran, is this how she treats guests? To just leave us stranded here like this, indeed, after your aunt left, they’ve really raised their tails high in the air."
