The Indifferent Ex-Husband Heartstrings in the Mall of Fate (Brandon and Sophia) novel Chapter 779

Haley’s words had already betrayed his sense of helplessness about this family.

Brandon never expected Haley to keep his relatives in check. The only reason he agreed to meet was to spare Sophia the guilt, so she wouldn’t someday look back and feel she’d failed her father.

Without another word, he stepped past Haley and opened the door.

Laura and Aaron were still waiting outside. The moment they saw Haley and Brandon emerge, they hurried over.

“Well? How did it go?” Laura couldn’t help but ask, her voice tight with worry.

Haley ignored her, simply said his goodbyes to Brandon, then turned to Laura and Aaron. “Let’s go home.”

But Aaron wasn’t about to leave without a straight answer.

“Brandon, just tell me the truth—Is Sophia still alive or not?”

He called out, loud enough that Susan, who was just coming downstairs, stopped in her tracks and instinctively looked over. There, she spotted Aaron, Haley, Laura, and Brandon standing in the hallway.

“What are you all doing here?” she demanded, her face darkening as she strode over.

Aaron, seizing on her arrival as if she were a lifeline, stepped forward eagerly. “Susan! Are you here looking for Sophia too? Just tell me—has Sophia come back?”

“No.”

Susan didn’t even hesitate. She’d overheard Brandon telling Grace on the phone to come down and see the guests out, which had made her wonder what visitors would come by so late. Curiosity had brought her down, and she hadn’t expected it to be Haley’s whole family.

The sight of them made her blood boil. She knew exactly what Aaron and Laura were like. She didn’t even bother to hide the contempt in her voice as she scoffed, “You’ve got some nerve showing up here. When Sophia disappeared, did you ever check in on her? And now, what—someone told you she’s back, and you’re here like vultures, hoping to leech off her again?”

Aaron and Laura’s faces went red, then pale. Only Haley kept silent. He muttered a quiet, “Let’s go,” and headed toward the elevator.

Brandon, meanwhile, had already pulled out his phone and was dialing building security. “Hello? Yes, this is apartment 1203. Could you please send someone up?”

At that, Aaron realized it was pointless to stick around. He managed a forced smile for Brandon. “Alright, Brandon, it’s getting late. We’ll be on our way. We’ll drop by another time.”

He grabbed Laura, who looked ready to burst into tears, and hurried her toward the elevator.

Susan watched them step inside and couldn’t help but spit out, “Of all the people to run into in the middle of the night. What a curse.”

She turned to Brandon, worried that this little family drama might sour his feelings toward Sophia. Softening her tone, she tried to explain, “Honestly, all those things Sophia’s brother and mother did—they went behind her back. She never knew. So please don’t—”

“I know,” Brandon interrupted gently. “It’s not an issue. You don’t need to worry.”

Relieved, Susan smiled. “That’s good.”

She glanced around, then asked, “Where’s Sophia? She’s not back yet?”

Sophia had already messaged her on WhatsApp to say she’d moved temporarily, and had sent the new address—not far from here.

“She’s already asleep,” Brandon replied, glancing at his watch. “I should get going. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

Susan smiled, a bit surprised Brandon had come over himself just to handle Sophia’s parasitic relatives.

Brandon drove straight home.

He had several missed calls from Yvonne and a couple from Patricia. Yvonne had also left him a WhatsApp message, asking which house he was at.

He called Yvonne back when he had a moment.

“Bran, Mom wants to know which house you’re at. She’s on her way to find you.”
