BLAZE

55 Vouchers

When I walked into the inn, the man in charge came straight over to receive me, his posture already bent into something submissive.

I didn’t care if they looked at me and saw a slave. The weight of my presence made it clear enough that I wouldn’t tolerate disobedience from a single soul.

Except for one redhead who had turned my whole damn world upside down.

“Has anyone come to visit my lady, or do you have any news?” I asked without wasting time.

“No, no, sir. But…” He stopped, and my body tensed at once.

“What happened?” My senses expanded immediately, searching for her on the third floor.

“Well, when my wife went up with the boys to fill her bath, no one answered the door, and… well, she went in without permission,” he said, twisting the cloth in his hands hard enough to nearly wring it apart.

“But she only did it because she was worried!” he rushed to add, and I relaxed when I felt my mate was safe. “Lady Isidora had fallen asleep. We didn’t want to wake her, so she hasn’t eaten dinner or bathed.”

“I’ll take care of what my lady needs.” I said, then told him what they were to prepare for dinner, her favorite dishes. “Have hot water sent up to my room first, and…” I paused when an idea crossed my mind. “When you bring dinner later, bring a bottle of your strongest fruity wine too.”

I passed him a few coins, and that seemed to inspire him even more.

I went up to the third floor and stopped outside her door, aching to go in, to see her, to breathe her in and feel her close, but I didn’t want to disturb her rest.

Pinching the bridge of my nose, I walked to my own door and glanced up at the ceiling, where I had hidden the things.

“No one has been here,” Soul said as he scanned the room, scenting for any trace that didn’t belong.

Outside, the night kept moving, growing thicker and darker. A little while later, someone knocked on my door. It was the inn staff.

They filled the small tub in my room. It wasn’t nearly as big as Isidora’s, but I didn’t care. She could have the luxuries.

The moment the boys finished, they nearly ran out of there.

“I’ll come down for the food when my lady wakes up,” I told the innkeeper’s wife before she could escape completely. “And if anyone comes looking for Blaze, send him up to this room.”

She nodded at once and hurried away down the hall.

I closed the door and began to undress. Once I had taken off my clothes and boots, I understood why the fear on their faces had been so obvious.

My cloak and boots were splattered with those men’s blood. I pulled them off in disgust. Rage had blinded me, and now I felt I had been too merciful by killing them so fast.
