From the comfortable chair they had left for me near the door, I watched the show with a cold expression.
Inside, I wasn’t comfortable at all watching Lucio intimidate her and beat her until she bled.
I wasn’t a sadist. I wasn’t cruel by nature either. Still, I had to force myself to change if I wanted to survive in a world this merciless.
“I know your mistress needs Dream Powder for someone else, that she’s only the middlewoman. Talk, you damn liar!” He hit her again, and the smell of blood became almost impossible to breathe through.
The chains binding her hands rattled violently, and the ceiling beam shook with every slap and kick.
She cried and begged, but in a silence that surprised even me.
I didn’t know what Blaze had done to her, but just as he had told me, he had a method to keep her from revealing anything in front of Lucio.
Yes… she couldn’t confess a thing, no matter how much he tried to gut the truth out of her.
Even if she wanted to scream it now, it was already too late.
“Well, I don’t know, but if you can’t even intimidate a servant….” I clicked my tongue, “I think this is starting to bore me.”
“Wait, wait, Isidora!” he shouted, and I saw him pull a dagger from his boot.
The sharp tip went to the woman’s neck while she sobbed uncontrollably.
By then, she was trembling so badly the chain wouldn’t stop vibrating.
“You’re not going to make me look bad. Who does your mistress need all that Dream Powder for every month?” Lucio asked her again, and at the same time, he revealed to me the information he knew.
“I know it’s a high-ranking Estingia, someone from the Light side. Either you tell me something useful now, or I’ll slit your throat, and I’m not joking. Do you hear me?” He dragged the dagger slowly across her cheek, opening the flesh.
I almost looked away, but I needed to see that man’s cruelty. I needed to see the real monster inside him, the one moved only by self-interest.
“I’m going to count to three, and if you don’t talk, then you’re no longer useful. I’ll kill you. I’m not joking.” The tip of the dagger dug into her neck.
She shook her head, her face already swollen and unrecognizable. Her gaze moved from Lucio to me and stayed there, 1 screaming for help.
It seemed to say, I already said everything. I already confessed everything.
And that was true.
Blaze already had all the important information, but Lucio couldn’t know that.
I was starting to understand there were important people involved in this whole business, and no one could know that I knew more than I should.
“How boring. I’m leaving.” I truly was disgusted by all of it.

I felt satisfied with my revenge, with having tortured her and made her feel the blows Lady Marion had given me because of the plan they had built together.
Still, when I reached the door, before I could touch the handle, a shriek rang out behind me, followed by the final rattle of the chains hanging her from the ceiling.
I closed my eyes, knowing the end had come for that squire.
Slowly, I turned and saw Lucio pulling the dagger from her neck, looking at me almost proudly.
“I did it. I proved my loyalty to you. I finished this woman off, and that could get me in trouble with Lady Stephanie,” he said, walking toward me with bloodstained hands and a dagger dripping red.
