Chapter 138

ISIDORA

I threw him onto the bed and started pulling off his filthy, blood-soaked clothes.

Blaze had his eyes shut, growling with his canines out as if he were fighting enemies no one else could see.

I checked him over, thinking Lucio might have hurt him, but no. He only had scratches and a few shallow bites.

“Oh, Goddess, you’re burning up…”

I ran to the bathroom for a basin and a clean cloth, but suddenly, the light above my head flickered.

A creepy sensation crawled over me, like too many footsteps were moving through the room at once.

I looked toward the door, terrified, and ran back to Blaze, but I stopped dead at what I saw… Or what I thought I saw.

The fire in the fireplace was dying, and the shadows were growing thicker.

They stretched, shifted, moved, and I could swear they were taking the shape of wolves.

My heart was pounding like crazy when red eyes appeared in the darkness, followed by threatening growls.

A howl of pain made me look toward the bed, where one of those rabid shadows had grabbed Blaze by the legs and arms.

His eyes were still closed, but he was roaring, and he looked like he was one second away from losing control.

“No! Leave Blaze alone! Let him go!”

Without thinking about the danger, I threw myself over him and shoved the first shadow I could reach.

When it passed through my body, I screamed in pain. It felt like a burning ember had touched my skin.

Still, I lost my mind. Protecting my man, I pushed him back onto the bed and stood between him and the danger.

Suddenly, all those shadows surrounded us. I could see them more clearly now.

They were like specters shaped like wolves, growling at me, baring those dangerous canines.

They closed in and stunned my mind.

My eyes lost focus, and wild, twisted thoughts rushed through my head, leaving me more confused by the second.

It was as if the world had suddenly turned gray.

But something kept me sane.

I had to protect Blaze, because something in my instincts told me I was the only one who could keep him away from this evil.

“Get out! Get out!” I roared again despite the fear, despite the terror clawing through me, when they lunged and sprang at

me

Something tore through my veins like a whirlwind and snapped awake as pure survival instinct.

I screamed in rage, and a wave of scarlet red burst out around me.

The flower in my womb burned and bloomed, and the mist turned into red she-wolves that rushed out to defend me.

Like that time in the arena. Only this enemy was far more dangerous.

The red collided with the darkness. My power tangled with fangs and claws.

I thought it would be a fight I might not win, but then something too strange happened.

Those wolves stepped back. They didn’t fight the barrier of furious she-wolves made of mist and Stygian power.

1 could swear even their death-filled eyes turned confused. Tamer… Curious.

Something happened that I couldn’t understand, but the darkness began to pull back, and the hostility choking the room faded.

I was sweating and panting, my power on the verge of collapse.

I barely managed to stay conscious, and this time, I didn’t faint like I had the first time.

This manifestation was my strongest move, and I knew I could only trigger it now when my life was at risk.

I dropped to my knees on the rug, panting, dizzy, but the light returned to the fireplace, and the whole scarlet tide of she- wolves flowed back into my body.

The threat over Blaze was gone.

Dragging myself across the bed, I climbed in beside him and collapsed, completely drained, but I could feel him getting his breath back.

When he sensed me beside him, he moved toward my body and crushed me under his weight, breathing deeply against my neck and making soft, rough sounds.

He was too heavy. Goddess, I could barely breathe.

Even so, I wrapped my arms tightly around him and let him take everything he needed from me.

I don’t know how much time passed. Several minutes, maybe, until Blaze finally slipped into sleep and his breathing calmed.

On the edge of passing out, I managed to roll him over on the bed and sucked in air like someone breaking the surface after drowning.

At least I had used those moments, while he refused to let go of me, to cycle the energy the way I had learned from the scroll.

I managed to activate it a little, but I needed more.

“Blessed Goddess…” I patted my chest, exhausted beyond words.

Even so, I pulled strength from somewhere I didn’t even know I had and went to get more water so I could clean him the way I had planned from the beginning.

The heat in his skin had gone down, but his body was still soaked with sweat.
