Chapter 14
Chapter 14
ISIDORA
“Good thing I’ve got a good memory, because this place is a maze…” I listened to Elessia as she led me to the supply store.
“They explain everything so fast I almost went crazy trying to memorize it all. But Dora, they’ve got everything in that stor. hey, are you still thinking about the trial?”
She gave me a soft pinch when she caught me drifting off again.
The truth was, I still couldn’t stop thinking about what the head of the Novices had told me after the ceremony ended.
She hadn’t wanted to give me Blaze’s key. There would be another trial later on, and only if I passed it would she give me more freedom where my slave was concerned.
They had taken him back to my room. He was hurt, hungry, thirsty… what torture.
“Sorry… it’s just… this is all too much for me too…” I sighed, lowering my head and looking down from the upper hallway to the floor below, where there was something like a reading room.
Every corner of this place had something new, something incredible, and one of its treasures was the supply store we were heading to now.
“Look, it’s here… you’re gonna perk right up when you see how much stuff they’ve got in there.” Elessia smiled and pointed toward a huge archway opening at the end of the hall.
Pulling my shoulders back, because I was officially an Estingia now, I decided I might as well enjoy the privileges that came with my new status.
Welcome to the Obsidian Fortress Supply Store. Name and rank.”
The second we stepped through the arched doorway, a woman greeted us from behind a long counter.
I’m…” I started to answer, but the woman was looking at Elessia.
I fell silent right away, and Elessia answered for me. I’d forgotten that most Estingias kept their interactions with servants to a minimum. They didn’t lower themselves… “to that level.”
“This is Lady Isidora, a Novice Estingia, and she still hasn’t claimed her monthly supplies…”
While they spoke, I couldn’t stop my eyes from wandering around the room.
The high ceiling seemed to glow with some kind of mineral embedded in the rock, and this was only the second level. Down another flight of stairs, there was a whole other space that looked endless.
The shelves rose in neat rows, one beside the next, forming aisles that looked like they went on forever.
My eyes went wide… this place had everything, and soon I’d be seeing it up close.
“My lady, I’ve already got the list of free things the pack gives Estingias,” Elessia said quietly. In front of other people, we had
to behave if we didn’t want trouble.
“The list? I thought they just gave it to you.”
“You have to go get it, but come on, everything’s numbered… unless you’d rather go rest and let me do it?” she asked, carrying an empty basket in her hands.
Chapter 14
“No, no, let’s go…”
All at once, curiosity hit harder than my urge to go back to my room.
I wanted to see how Blaze was doing, but it also crossed my mind that maybe there was some kind of medicine here for him.
It was true that every row and section had big numbered signs, and that helped, but both of us were dazzled by how much stuff there was.
“And you’re saying I can take all this for free?” I asked in the toiletries section, staring at all kinds of soaps with amazing scents I’d never even tried before.
“Yesss… every month they give you a ton of free stuff. You better give one of those little soaps to your best friend. Don’t he cheap,” she whispered, all excited.
