Chapter 149
ISIDORA
I was a little anxious, pacing around the entrance of the greenhouse.
The girls still hadn’t arrived, and I couldn’t keep putting this off. It was already late afternoon.
Had I pushed them too hard?
When I stopped by to check on Lady Karla, she was no longer in the infirmary.
“My lady, they’re coming…” Blaze’s gentle voice suddenly echoed from the tree where he was leaning so calmly.

I tensed, staring toward a little path between the trees, and at last they appeared in the clearing in front of the entrance.
“Lady Karla” I hurried toward her. At first glance, she looked fine.
Both of them wore simple clothes, like mine when I came here to work.
“Are you all right? Don’t push yourself. I can talk to the woman…”
“Don’t worry, I’m fine… Thank you,” she told me in a serious, intense voice, as if she had a knot in her throat. “Even if she doesn’t want to sell us the tonic, we’re very grateful for this opportunity…”
“Yes, yes, we won’t make you look bad, Isi, but…” The little blonde, who warmed up to people faster, suddenly stopped.
Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
“Are the tonic prices very expensive?”
“Mikaela,” Lady Karla said under her breath, and the girl lowered her head.
It seemed they had already talked about it. Obviously, they were short on money.
“Don’t worry. I’m sure it won’t be impossible to pay.” I told them with an uncomfortable smile.
The truth was, I hadn’t thought about that. That old woman who always spoke in riddles had only talked to me about work.
But if they were also charged a high price, I was secretly willing to help the girls.
“Come on. She doesn’t like us arriving late,” I hurried them along a little, and Blaze came closer to walk behind us.
They looked visibly nervous, especially Mikaela, who was much easier to read.
Karla walked with a firm step, but every now and then I noticed the grimace of pain she was trying to hide.
I was afraid she wasn’t very recovered, but if this was the effort she wanted to make, I wouldn’t stop her anymore.
“Don’t touch anything. Even if you see the most beautiful flower in the world, I assure you it’s probably poisonous…”
“Is that how you promote my greenhouse? As the gate to the underworld itself?” The voice of that witch. I mean, my boss. rang out in front of me and stopped me cold.
Turns out she was at the end of the entrance hallway.
“No wonder no one answered my notice on the board,” she told me, raising an eyebrow.

Chapter 149
I could’ve sworn the skin under the bandage looked… different.

“Heh, heh, I just didn’t want any accidents.” I laughed awkwardly. “Look, these are the Novice Estingias I told you about.”
I stepped aside so they could move forward.
Their faces were priceless. They were stiffer than students standing in front of the strictest teacher in the world.
Standing beside Blaze, I wondered if I had really looked the same, with that terrified face.
“I don’t like whiners. People come here to work, and I don’t give a damn if you’re Estingias,” she told them all at once. “You’ll have to pick plants, water them, plant, do whatever needs doing and whatever I tell you. Do you understand?”
“Yes, yes, ma’am,” they answered right away, like little chicks pecking at corn.
The truth was, all of this made me want to laugh. Of course, that was easy when I wasn’t the one in trouble.
“Isidora recommended you. She told me you want two Tonics as payment to control your Novice powers.” The girls nodded even harder.
“We… we don’t have all the money they’re worth, but if you give us some time…”
“And who said anything about money?” she cut Lady Karla off without mercy. “I need workers, not buyers. If I wanted buyers, I’d already be selling it in the store.”
She said it while bringing that long pipe to her mouth and releasing curls of smoke.
