“If you want something, you stand firm despite the consequences. I like your spirit, girl. Keep going like that,” she told me, turning her back to leave.

She didn’t shake my hand and left me standing there like an idiot… had she accepted the forty percent?

“Take one of the empty little bottles from the upper drawer on the right. That tonic is your welcome gift. Use it well,” her voice reached me from the center of the room already, lost among the columns and the hanging plants.

A smile appeared on my face despite the exhaustion.

“Thank you for the forty percent… teacher!” I shouted after her too, half mocking her, since she had called me her disciple.

“Give this shameless girl an inch and she takes a mile…” I barely heard her mutter before I heard the entrance door close.

Then my excited eyes moved toward Blaze, who was silent off to one side.

“Blaze, the old woman taught me something incredible!” I shouted, jumping into his open arms and leaning against his huge chest as if I didn’t have any bones left.

I laughed happily, and his hand suddenly rose to caress my head.

“My lady is the best. You’ll be the strongest Estingia.” His deep voice carried a trace of pride that made my heart flutter.

“Blaze. I’ll protect you.” I suddenly lifted my gaze and found his. “Whatever is threatening you… I’ll protect you. I won’t judge you for anything. I won’t hate you. I’ll support you.”

My words came out with the same firmness I felt in my heart.

Something shifted inside his eyes, an intense, turbulent emotion… and sadness. He looked sad.

“Blaze…”

I wanted to say something else, but he suddenly hugged me. So hard my lungs and bones protested, but I didn’t stop him.

It was a desperate hug as he hid in the hollow of my neck.

The roughness of the muzzle scraped my skin and tangled in my fiery hair, but I didn’t push him away.

I hugged him back with the same intensity and hunger, with the same desperation.

Because when he acted like that, fear grew in my chest, the fear that the moment to say goodbye was getting closer.

“Blaze…” I tried to question him again, but he set me away from him just as suddenly as he had pulled me close.

But his gaze was lowered, evasive, like I had rarely seen it. He was always brave and never afraid to face anything.

“I’ll put the tonic in the bottle. Your hand is trembling, my lady. Sit down for a moment and rest,” his hoarse voice echoed through the silent space where only our heavy breathing could be heard.

He had closed himself off again. There was no point in pressing him.

Sighing in defeat, I sat on one of the stools beside a nearby counter and watched him.

With skill, he found the little glass bottle and began pouring the small amount of thick liquid into the tiny container.

So much work for so little product. That was why the old woman said it was annoying and sold it so expensively.
