Chapter 16
ISIDORA
“Private fights aren’t allowed inside the Fortress unless you take them to the arena!” a woman’s sharp voice rang out from the
entrance.
I turned and saw a tall, sturdy warrior with long blond hair and piercing blue eyes watching us coldly.
The whip was in her hand, clenched tight, and her aura told me she was an Estingia of much higher rank.
I’m sorry, Lady Brigitte, it’s just that this Estingia…” That snake Arlene immediately started making excuses for herself, because it was obvious she knew her.
“Lady Isidora only said the same thing I did, that she needed to move out of the line because the product she wanted wasn’t here, the clerk cut in.
No matter how furious Arlene looked, she had to swallow it in front of the higher-ranking Estingia.
“Control your wolves’ tempers. At the beginning they’re very volatile, and next time the punishment won’t be just a warning” she said firmly, and I nodded, looking at her with secret admiration.
More than anything, though, I noticed the man right behind her.
He was tall and lean, all wiry muscle. Dark hair. Plain clothes, but the quality of them stood out right away.
Was that her Dark Slave?
He seemed to follow her with quiet ease, calm, almost like he was doing it willingly.
Not like so many others I’d seen in chains, even crawling like dogs behind their mistresses.
Did some slaves really want to stay with their Estingias?
Lady Brigitte left, and Arlene went after her, but not before shooting me one last look that promised trouble later.
At last Elessia managed to tally up everything she’d taken from the shelves, but when I showed the medicine, I ran into something I hadn’t thought about.
“That’ll be three gold coins,” the woman said, pointing to the price tag on the base that I hadn’t noticed.
“Excuse me? I can’t get it with the free things?”
“No, Lady Isidora. That ointment isn’t free. It’s in the paid section. Most things here have to be bought with the money you earn as an Estingia. We only give you a small allowance of free supplies…”
Red rushed across my whole face. Beside me, Elessia gave me a complicated look. We were poorer than rats.
Servants got pennies for wages, and I’d spent my savings from years of work on that flowered dress for my first time with
Lucio.
“Well… thank you, but I can’t…”
“I can let you pay it off in installments, just for what you did earlier. You can take on missions and pay me back later,” she
said.
It was generous. Still, I hesitated.

Three gold coins… I had never seen that much money in my life. Why was one ointinent so expensive? It had to be trip qualty
But then I thought about Blaze. About how hurt he was. How much pain he had to be in.
Thank you.. I’ll pay you back. I promise…” I said, reaching out and taking the jar in a tight grip.
“I don’t doubt it… you’re one of the… special Estingias,” she said with a half smile she hid almost at once.
It seemed like showing any kindness in this place was practically a sin. I didn’t know what she meant by “special”, but I hope she meant it as a compliment.
By the time we left the store, I was dead tired.
“Dora, you’ve got to be careful here, friend. It’s not enough just to be an Estingia. All those stuck-up girls have money and family backing them. A lot of them donate to the Tower…”
Elessia kept warning me as we walked. Of course I knew I’d have to work twice as hard as they did.
“But you were so brave. Look at you, talking back and everything.”
“Dork.” I bumped her shoulder while we both carried the basket now that we were almost at my room.
