Mika and Karla forced themselves to pull it together, and we started thinking because time was running out.

“Why did they want to do this? What are those crazy bitches Arlene and Morgan planning?” Mikaela helped me tie the bandage before closing my uniform again.

“I think they wanted to lure the beast here and keep it busy, so they could clear a route through the labyrinth…. It looks like they have a faster way to reach the ruins.”

“That’s cheating. Damned cheaters.”

“Anything goes here, Mika,” Karla told her, but anger bled through her words. “The beast can’t get into this passage. It’s too narrow for him. Maybe if we clear the rocks from the collapse….”

“That would take too much time and energy. Even if we managed to get out, there’s no way we’d reach the ruins before dawn. We’d be out,” I said, still thinking.

Then my Estingia magic caught something.

Yes… I had left a thin thread floating nearby, watching for danger, and it found something that made my skin tighten.

Tiny legs were crawling in the dark.

They came from a tunnel something had dug through the earth, moving toward us from the dark wall in front of us.

It was trying to catch us by surprise.

True, the beast couldn’t reach its prey here… but what if something else caught us and carried us to it?

“Listen to me. Quick. Come here, come here. There’s no time….”

I pulled them toward me and laid out a fast plan, one that could save our lives.

A few minutes later, my Estingia magic warned me that a crawling bug had slipped out through a hole in the wall across from us. It stayed hidden in the dark, watching.

We had our eyes closed and were breathing hard, as if there wasn’t enough oxygen.

Weak, unaware prey.

Exactly the way it liked its prey.

Its hundreds of little legs moved silently, and its body rose with a hissing sound, huge mandibles clicking as it got ready to blow that hallucinogenic powder at us.

Sorry, but right now, I didn’t feel like playing house with “Blaze” again.

“Now, Mika!”

I shouted, and the whip cracked through the air, wrapping around the creature. It took only a second to react, but by then, it was already too late.

Karla’s claw-shaped shadows burst from the ground and grabbed it, forcing it down until its body slammed into the floor with a heavy thud while it fought to break free.

I stood over it with my sword activated, a flame of red magic burning around the blade. I had learned that those centipedes didn’t like fire.

“Keep moving and you’ll be a dead bug.” I pointed the sharp tip at one of its little eyes, and when the Estingia flame lit up its black, half-shed scales, I got the most incredible surprise of the night.

“Well, well, what do we have here? Isn’t this my friend from the Blue Forest? I’ll have to call Blaze and tell him you left your spot.”

A predatory smile spread across my face as I watched it collapse to the floor like it had deflated, trembling.

Just hearing Blaze’s name made it shake with terror.

Of all the centipedes that fed on dreams and happiness, I had found the very same one that had given us its scales in the Blue Forest.

An idea came to me at once.

“Girls, I found the guide who’s going to get us out of these caves and take us to the ruins.” I said in a low, threatening voice. leaning toward it with my sword in hand.
