“Matriarch, it was as you suspected. The Estingia Isidora and the Obsidian Estingia Legna are connected. She chose her in front of everyofre as her disciple…”
Helen’s fingers tapped against the majestic white throne where she sat, the same throne that had cost her blood and sweat to conquer, the same one she kept warm without being its true owner.
Because no matter how much they called her Matriarch, she wasn’t the highest authority in the Estingia Tower, the central axis that ruled this pack of powerful women.
Helen was considered the most powerful Silvered Estingia, but this throne belonged to the oldest elder, the Supreme Elder/ and wise woman of the entire pack, the one who spoke with the Goddess and received prophecies and visions straight from the deity herself.
But that blind old relic hadn’t given one prophecy worth a damn in years. All she did was drain resources and, worse, keep Helen in the place of a substitute.
A second choice.
“It doesn’t matter that she took two more disciples. That has to be a cover for that damned whore,” Helen said with contempt, in the tone she only used when she didn’t have to be perfect in front of everyone else.
“My Lady, the Alpha of the Midnight Pack refused to sell me more Dream Dust, even under threat from the Estingia Tower…”
“That idiot thinks he’s safe under Legna’s wings!”
Helen struck the armrest, barely holding back her rage.
The huge ring with the emerald gem flashed like the plans burning in her eyes.
If she had known that fat girl named Isidora would turn into such a powerful, skilled Estingia in so little time, she never would’ve sent her like that to the fortress of those harpies.
Helen’s mind raced while the warrior who served as her personal attendant remained on her knees, waiting for orders.
The Tower was the heart of the Estingias of Light, and the Fortress represented the Dark Estingias, but light had always prevailed over darkness.
At least in administrative control.
But in power and strength….
Helen knew that if Legna ever abandoned that loose, liberal life she led and decided to get serious, she could very well rip full control of the pack out of Helen’s hands.
“Over my dead body…” she muttered, clenching her fist.
She couldn’t decide what to do. One false step, and everything she had built could come crashing down in pieces.
What she needed most right now was more Dream Dust, because that was how she had kept the Supreme Elder locked inside her chamber, hallucinating and sleeping through dreams with the Goddess that the old woman believed were real.
Helen hadn’t finished her off outright because that would have looked suspicious. The other Estingias weren’t that stupid, and they knew better than anyone that Helen benefited most from the Supreme Elder’s death.

But that Dream Dust had been the perfect solution.
Now, though, it was running out, and she no longer had the same access as before.
It was obvious Helen had placed her bets on the wrong Estingias.

How Legna had discovered Isidora’s abilities, how they had managed to control the Midnight Pack’s factory and manipulate things enough to place the Alpha who suited them best, Helen didn’t know exactly. But it wasn’t so easy to sink her claws into that pack anymore with Legna acting as its protector.
She should have controlled the situation directly.
But to avoid exposing herself, she had used that idiot, the Estingia Stephanie, the same way she always used whatever Estingias she needed. Now Helen understood she had gambled on the wrong warrior.
“Send a notice to the Fortress. The New Moon Estingias will be included in the Winter Castle Tournament,” she ordered.
Her warrior lifted her head, startled.
“The event to choose the Estingias who will be presented as candidates for the Lycan King’s castle guard?”
Helen nodded.
She knew why her attendant reacted that way. Taking part in this selection was the first step toward going to the capital and being chosen by the Lycan King’s palace as part of His Majesty’s guard.
Many Estingias dreamed of that their entire lives, even if others saw it as a chain.
But Helen was certain that a girl like Isidora, one who had never seen the world, would be dazzled by that opportunity.
One Helen would give her.
One she would use to draw her to her side by any means necessary, because now she was genuinely curious about the scarlet power of her Estingia wolf.
Legna had seen something in that girl….
Something Helen had missed.
But she would find out everything.
Absolutely everything.
What was so special about Isidora?
She would know.
