Chapter 180
ISIDORA
“Now you
you think you matter because you’re disciples of a powerful Estingia?”

I heard that mocking little tone even as I climbed the enormous staircase to the upper levels, places I had never set foot in before.
“Are you going to ask your teacher for a loan so you can bid on a better room? Or maybe your little friend Isidora?”
My gaze found the group of Estingias at the far end of the landing, the four of them standing like a pack of hyenas in front of Karla and Mikaela.
“Pft, everyone knows Isidora is poorer than a sewer rat. She works at the greenhouse like hired help…”
“I’m going to smash your mouth in, you idiot!”
“Lady Karla.”
My voice came out razor–sharp as I stopped her, and she turned her dark eyes toward me, the anger in them settling the second she saw me.
Mikaela was holding her by the arm.
“Dora…” she muttered, like she was asking me for help and worrying about my feelings at the same time.
Those spiteful eyes slid toward me next. Obviously, the fact that Master Legna had chosen us was bothering them.
“It’s those squires,” I heard Elessia mutter under her breath.
Of course.
Those women were only repeating whatever their ladies said.
“I see everyone’s very worried about how much money I have in my pocket.” I stepped in front of the four of them and let the sharp edge of my Estingia aura slip out.
They stiffened.
They hadn’t taken part in the insane ritual–orgy that had amplified our power.
“We’re only saying it’s better to keep your expectations realistic and your feet on the ground…” Before that redheaded girl named Zara could spit out any more poison, I reached out and grabbed the collar of her
uniform.
She went rigid, alarm flashing through her pale eyes.

Chapter 180
“Wh–what are you doing…? Fights are forbidden in the hallway…

“My expectations are very realistic. So realistic that I can guarantee whatever scraps Daddy gives you to fund your little princess life here won’t be enough to compete with me.”
I shoved her back into the others, who stood there just as stunned as she was.
A shocked silence hung in the air.
Before they could react, I walked through the open doors.
“Karla, Mikaela, Elessia, are you waiting for a damn engraved invitation?”
I growled, knowing very well Blaze was following right behind me, and I would bet anything he was staring down those stupid girls‘ slaves with ice in his eyes.
They were still clinging to those childish old habits, mocking and humiliating whoever they thought stood beneath them.
Apparently, they still hadn’t realized that the higher you rose in this Fortress, the uglier the dangers became.
That kind of novice hazing should have been left behind already.
My eyes
hardened when I reached the enormous hall.
Several chairs had been arranged in the front row, with more seats behind them.
A large dais rose at the far end, the stone wall behind it left bare, though above it hung rolled tapestries.
Whatever they showed was still hidden, waiting to be unfurled.
Blaze stopped by one of the side walls, that intimidating mask on his face and his golden eyes promising trouble.
He never stopped watching me.
Never stopped searching for anything that might become a threat.
My silent, lethal protector.
Elessia sat in the seat behind me, receiving hostile looks and giving them right back.
I had told her not to waste saliva or anger. Soon enough, we would speak with actions.
Finally, my other friends sat on either side of me in the first row.
Their squires hadn’t come with them, but their slaves stood near Blaze and the enormous floor–to–ceiling window that filled the whole chamber with cold gray light.
The other four idiots took the first–row seats farthest from us, as if we were carrying some contagious disease.

“Idiots…” Karla huffed beside me, annoyed.

“Dora, you shouldn’t have paid them any attention. I heard those rooms are expensive.” Mika held my hand with her damp one.
When I turned to her with a reassuring smile, she suddenly let go, and her cheeks went red.
Her light gaze dodged mine quickly, and all at once I became aware of the memories from last night too.
At least some of them. Others were still too tangled and blurred in my
mind.
