It was obvious he’d come in through the half-open doors to the room.
“If anyone here is worth seeking out in person, it’s you… Lady Isidora.”
His magnetic voice seemed to vibrate through the room.
He was handsome, with those superior Alpha genes of a man who’d almost been born a lycan.
Not everyone in the other branches of the royal family was born one, and now it seemed more impossible than ever.
“He asked you to choose me, didn’t he? To keep this charade going…” I said bitterly.
He sighed.
“Yes. I can offer you every comfort. His Majesty’s private mansion in the capital is already ready for you to claim, and the King’s personal coffers would be at your disposal…”
“I don’t want anything. Not his fortune, not some position given to me as a consolation prize… I just want you to tell me everything you know about the lycan curse. I need something to go on…”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with that…”
“I just want to save him! Do you understand?! Or won’t you help me because you want the throne for yourself?”
I’d completely lost it and was being disrespectful. Still, all he did was frown, his expression turning hard.
“I’ve never wanted this throne or the power that comes with it. Vhaelor Grimnwall is the most incredible man I’ve ever known. He took my mother and me in after we were thrown out of my father’s noble House… The fact that I wasn’t a prized lycan didn’t sit well with my father.”
His mouth twisted with contempt.
“I call His Majesty my uncle, but I’m only a distant relative through his mother’s side of the family. He owed me nothing. Even so, he placed the person he loved most in my care.”
He looked directly at me again, and I felt a little ashamed for accusing him.
“And I plan to keep my promise for as long as I live… I’m sorry, but even if I had a lead, which I don’t… I wouldn’t send you off to die.”
He said it with such certainty that I knew he wouldn’t be my ally.
No one was my ally in this madness. I was still on my own.

The Last Lycan King Is My Slave
My gaze moved back to the mysterious portrait.

“Elena Ashborne was King Vhaelor’s mother and my closest relative.” He told me when he saw how interested I was.
I smiled at the mention of the Ashborne name again.
The first time I’d heard it was in that dream, where we were happy in a mountain pack and had a baby girl named Amber.
He’d created that whole beautiful illusion for us. I had no doubts left.
I’d never had control over any of it.
I lowered my head and swallowed back the tears that were always so close to the surface.
“What are you going to do with my squire?” I asked suddenly, changing the subject completely.
“I can forgive you for not wanting to help me with my mate’s curse, but I won’t forgive you if you hurt her.” My gaze sharpened as I faced him.
Honestly, I didn’t care whether he became King someday or not.
For the first time, I saw indecision flicker in his eyes. He avoided my gaze and looked outside.
“It’s complicated…”
“Love is always complicated, but if you’re going to reject her, make it a clean break. Make it clear. Do it to her face,” I said harshly.
“It hurts more to live on hope for a future that’ll never come.”
His
gaze met mine again, his eyes full of storms, and without another word, we both knew I was talking about myself.
“I never said I was going to reject her…”
“But you will, because she doesn’t belong in this perfect world of nobles, does she?”
He said nothing. That told me everything.
My poor Elessia. I didn’t know what we’d done to the Goddess to make her punish us like this.
“I just have one request, Your Lordship,” I added, determined to leave the room that was strangling my soul.
“Whatever you wish will be granted, Lady Isidora…”
“If anything happens to me, let Elessia return safely to the Estingia Tower, and give her whatever was meant for me.”
He frowned again. We stood facing each other, questions hanging in the air, but he didn’t ask a single one.
