Chapter 27
¡SIDORA
“I… I… well…”
“Let me know if you’re planning to stand there all day babbling like an idiot at my door, so I can slam it in your face.
“Wait!” I stopped the door before it smashed into my nose. “I’m here about the job.” I finally got the words ont.
Truth was, what I’d done had been rude as hell, but I had to admit the mummy that came out of the greenhouse had completely thrown me off.
And yeah, I say mummy because it was a person, but she was wrapped in bandages that covered her whole face, her neck her hands, and the rest of her was hidden under clothes that covered everything.
From the rough, husky voice, and the fact that it was female, I figured she was a woman.
She opened the door wider, and a pair of dark eyes, scary as hell, stared straight into me.
I went rigid in the doorway while she looked me over without saying a word.
I couldn’t just stand there like that. I had to tell her what I could do.
“The ad said you need someone to take care of the greenhouse. I’m good with plants, and I…”
“This isn’t about watering orchids and daisies. These are medicinal plants, poisonous plants, some with magical properties, some extremely rare. You can die in a second if you touch what you shouldn’t…” she said, throwing the warnings at me raw and blunt.
Everything behind those fences sounded like a minefield. I couldn’t tell if she really needed an assistant or if she was trying
to scare me off.
“I can’t pay you much, but I can teach you herbalism, even though these days the only thing Estingias care about is running around fighting like a bunch of butches,” she huffed like an old woman, and honestly, I was pretty sure she was one.
With her back bent, she was shorter than me, and her body looked thin under all those layers. Her hair was a dull shade of platinum.
“I’ll take it,” I blurted out. Out of impulse, out of desperation, I don’t know. “I want to learn herbalism, granny…”
“Who the hell told you you could call me granny?!”
“Ouch!” I groaned when she kicked me in the shin with her boot, and damn, it hurt. Damn old witch!… I mean… yeah… Better not think that way about my boss.
“If you ever call me granny, old woman, or witch again, I’ll give you the beating your mother never did,” she snarled, and there went the image of some poor frail old lady. She was a vicious little harpy, mean and full of energy.
“Just so you know, this is a trial period. Plenty have come here before, and none of them ever lasted…”
She motioned for me to come in, and for the first time, I stepped into a fascinating world I’d never imagined existed.
The door shut behind me, and I followed her down a path.
Above our heads, an arch of vines formed some kind of tunnel, beautiful and thick with a scent so intoxicating it almost felt unreal.
