Chapter 74
¡SIDORA
Blaze suddenly called out to me, pulling me out of my doubts.
“Nothing. Come on, you must be tired.” I picked Amber up again and followed him back to the house.
I was caught off guard when I saw a group of men coming down the hill with several carts full of game. They had covered everything with tarps, but the smell of blood reached us from far off. They were the other hunters who had gone out with Blaze, bringing back the rest of the meat.
They greeted me with respect, and I returned the gesture, careful not to use any names, still surprised by so many new faces… Where had I come up with all these people?
It turned out one whole cartload of meat was for my house. I understood why everyone looked at Blaze with respect He seemed to be helping all of them through these hard days, and that wasn’t even counting the envy showing plain as day in the other houses.
I had enough food for the whole village.
“Thank you for your help. Without you, we wouldn’t have come back alive. The Blue Forest gets more dangerous every day,” one of the older males told Blaze after helping him store everything in the root cellar we had out in the yard.
I was in the kitchen of the little rustic house, which still had this warm, comfortable, lived-in feel. I could hear them talking through the window while I figured out what I needed to make a good meal.
The words “Blue Forest” caught my attention.
The clues were starting to unfold right in front of me, and I swear I wanted to follow them… and at the same time, I didn’t. I told myself there was nothing wrong with pretending, just for one day, that all of this was real.
The neighboring hunters left, and nobody else bothered us.
Amber started playing with some rag dolls she’d brought out of her room. I watched her through the little opening between the kitchen and the living room while she babbled happily over a “party” with her friends on the rug.
I couldn’t stop smiling at her little-girl chatter, but while I was watching her, distracted, the knife I was using to peel the sweet potatoes slipped.
“Ssshhh…” I hissed in pain, and red blood immediately welled up.
I dropped the knife and pressed my finger, meaning to run it under water, only for a man’s hand to take it gently.
The heat of Blaze’s muscular body pressed into my back, pushing me against the counter.
My finger sank between those sexy lips, and he licked it with his tongue.
I blushed, little shocks of pleasure running through my whole body while he healed me with his saliva.
