Lowered my head in embarrassment. Powerful women passed by us, all of them cutting sideways glances at me
They weren’t laughing in my face like before, but I knew they were still doing it, just more quietly.
-I exhaled, trying to psych myself up, because with this much climbing and all these stairs, I definitely wasn’t going to miss om on exercise, and maybe I’d even lose a few pounds.
Suddenly, a door swung open, and we stepped onto a staircase cut into the rock wall.
Just looking down made my stomach drop, the abyss stretching deep below us and looking endless.
And yet, lights were moving down there, and people’s voices floated through the air.
We wound down in a spiral, keeping close to the rocky wall that snaked through what looked like the inside of a volcano’s throat, until she stopped in front of another huge door, painted red too.
“This is where your initiation ceremony with the other new Estingias will take place,” she said, turning to face me and making me swallow with my nerves stretched to the limit..

Im not going to lie. You’re at the biggest disadvantage, but remember what you felt when Mirla tried to put her hands on what was yours fight with teeth and claws.”
Thank you for everything…” I couldn’t help saying, feeling that despite her roughness, she wasn’t a bad person.
“Don’t thank me yet. And remember… trust no one. Show mercy to no one. Only strength is respected here…”
With those words, she shoved the wooden panels open, and it was like a wave of hot air came out and slapped me across the face
“Go,” she told me without stepping inside.
I looked ahead, where a hallway black as a wolf’s mouth waited for me.
With my heart pounding like crazy, I took the first step even though my body resisted, and every step teh like hell.
I sank into the darkness, searching for the light at the end of the tunnel.
BAM
The door slammed shut behind me, and I spun around in fear… there was no turning back.
I kept going because this was what I wanted. This was only the beginning.
Suddenly drums thundered (rough the huge chuniber I stepped into,
I looked up at the high walls, where rows of seats had been carved in tiers
They were full of women, each with a man beside her
The harsh torchlight, the heat rolling through that enormous chamber, all of it overwhelmed me
Fall im with the other novice Estingias. You’re holding up the ceremony,” a blonde woman’s tiren voice rang out frontconc
side
She looked severe, like all of them did, and beside her stood the warrior I’d backhanded.
I swallowed when I saw the malice in her stare. I had a bad feeling I was going to pay dearly for that outburst
The piercing sound of the starting signal shook the huge cavern, and all I saw was a blur shooting past me.
I ran on pure instinct. The course in front of me split into several paths, but the closest one was an earthen rise.
Two Estingias were already climbing it like monkeys, even shoving each other along the way.

1 knew they’d all be chasing the reward while I was just trying not to die doing this.
My fingers dug into the dirt, and my boots drove the full weight of my body upward.

I was already panting with my tongue practically hanging out, and the seams were straining to the point of bursting while my arms clung to the rocks and I stared up at the top, which looked impossible to reach.
Still, scraping up my legs and tearing my palms raw, I kept climbing with everything I had.
Once the other Estingias reached the top and moved on, it got easier without gravel hitting my eyes and face.
I almost wanted to pat myself on the back, thrilled I hadn’t collapsed in the very first trial,
But then my hand stretched out, so close to the top, already tasting my first victory, when something sharp dug into my ankle and claws yanked me down hard…
“Aaahh!”
