Chapter 96

ISIDORA

“Thank you, sir. You were our salvation,” I said, taking the old wagon driver’s hands and slipping a coin between them.

When he lowered his hands, embarrassed, and saw the gold shining between his calloused fingers, his eyes went wide.

“No, I can’t take this. I can’t….”

“Yes, you can, and you will. Think of your sick grandson. It’s only my way of thanking you.” His eyes reddened when I said

that.

He had been kind to us from the very beginning, far kinder than most people would have been. There weren’t many like

him left.

He had waited for us on the road as promised, with the empty wagon, and brought us all the way to the marketplace. He had even spoken to a friend of his, the one who rented us the stall.

Thanks to him, we had also learned plenty of things we didn’t know about this pack.

“Tha… thank you, Lady Isidora. If I had known you were a distinguished Estingia….”

“Then we wouldn’t be friends. Besides, I told you to only use that formality if you ever need to find me at the Estingia Tower.” I squeezed his hands one last time while Blaze unloaded the bundles wrapped in leaves.

After one final goodbye, he left, and I turned with a sigh to look at the little stall we had rented for as long as we stayed here.

For some reason, it reminded me of the one I had owned in my fantasy and never used. We spent two silver coins because the spot was central, and besides the stall itself, it came with a small storage room.

Blaze and I needed to do certain things in secret, out of sight from anyone passing by.

Several vendors from the neighboring stalls looked at us with curiosity, but they soon went back to their own business.

It was still early, and the market was already moving. This pack lived mostly off trade. It was large and important enough to draw people from many nearby places, even from the Estingia pack.

“We need to keep this somewhere safe,” Blaze said, unwrapping the small wooden chest. “And we also need to buy a strong rasp to grind down all those scales.”

He pointed at the pile of dark scales, black as obsidian, that the centipede had stored in its den and handed over to us.

Blaze had threatened to go back for more. He told the creature that if it hadn’t stored them away, he would be more than willing to rip them off its back himself.

The poor thing had run off the second it was free, but I was sure its terror of Blaze had been burned into every one of its legs.

“All right. We also need to find somewhere to rest,” I told him in a neutral tone, though I didn’t want to look at his face for too long.

I was trying to bury whatever was happening between us and focus on the things that mattered right now.

“Fine… I’ll step out for a moment and find someone to sell at the stall for us,” he suggested.

I agreed, but then my eyes went back to the plain-looking chest.

Chapter 96

“I have an idea. I need your help….” I looked straight into his golden eyes and ignored the sting in my stupid heart.

“Command me, my lady,” he answered without hesitation.

So I told him my plan.

A little while later, Blaze and I walked through the prosperous Midnight pack.
