Petty woke up early the next morning. After a quick wash, she headed straight up to the intensive care unit on the top floor.
She had barely slept at all the night before.
But she had pretended to be asleep, making sure no one else noticed.
More importantly, the thought of seeing her baby—of holding him and feeding him his bottle—gave her something to look forward to. It gave her a reason to keep living.
She refused to treat herself like a sick patient.
Stepping out of her room, she pulled her sleeves down carefully to conceal the bandage on her wrist.
From down the hall, Jay watched her step into the elevator before knocking on Franco's door and walking in. "The—Ms. Petty has gone up to see Abacus."
Franco buttoned his hospital shirt. "Yeah."
Jay followed him out of the room. While they waited for the elevator, Jay gave his report: "Nash exhibited no suspicious behavior after returning to the university yesterday. He attended his meetings, taught his classes, and went straight home. He's always been a recluse with zero social life."
It was exactly what Franco had expected. His expression remained icy. "Nash is incredibly cunning. Even if he's hiding something, he wouldn't show his hand this quickly. Keep our people watching him from the shadows."
"Understood."
When the elevator reached the top floor, Franco stepped out. He watched the heavy isolation doors slowly sliding shut. Petty was walking carefully inside, double-checking her protective suit.
He stopped in his tracks, quietly observing her intense focus.
The doors sealed shut, swallowing Petty's slender silhouette entirely.
Franco looked away and walked toward the doctor's office.
The doctor was already waiting. Seeing Franco enter, he immediately stood up. Franco waved him down and took the seat across from him.
